Default Help me build a Bumble Bee.

I am pretty set on doing this build and have the parts or know where I want to get them. BUT I am worried about not being able to do the squealing horse pick harmonics with the neck I want. I bought a sweet birdseye maple neck for a recent Strat build I did, which included a Floyd Rose and EMGs.

It's such an awesome guitar, but doesn't do well with screaming, dive bomb pick harmonics. I really want the same neck for my Bumble Bee. Is this a matter of nut to bridge saddle distance? How can I make sure I will be able to get this effect before diving in?

And I have a Wolfetone Marshallhead pickup I really want to use, but I want it to be the right cream color as on the VH II one. Is it possible to replace that plastic or will I need to paint it?

it should all be in the setup. If the action is set low enough, right intonation, strings and of course pickup it hot enough you should be good to go with the neck. As long as it feels good to you and is the right fit and is comfortable to play the right setup and or tech will ensure it does what you want.

My guitar tech has taken some pretty rough necks over the years and tweaked them to my specs (action wise) and they freakin rock just fine for all my Edward actrobatics and pinched harmonics...

    my 2 cents

If I'm not mistaken, the color of the plastic is the bobbin itself that the wire is wrapped around, so you can't change the color unless you unwrap the thousands of spins of wire and recoil it around a different bobbin. Paint would most likely ruin the pickup.

You know you can do what I did. Buy any pickup you want and just buy cream colored bobbin stickers and put them on. Works great and they're high quality. I used a new Wolfgang pickup on my Bee so it was zebra. I just put a cream bobbin sticker on the black side. Problem solved.

Wow. Very cool, those bobbin toppers. Thanks!

I was playing my EMG Strat last night and I guess the pick harmonics aren't as hard as I thought on it. I can't fit a D-Tuna on that Floyd, but I don't really use that guitar for that kind of music anyway. It's more for my Rush tribute band and other stuff.

I'll probably take the neck off that Strat in the photo and use it for the Bumble Bee and then order another one with abalone dots to put back on the Strat. I'll probably order neck and body today and then all I'll need is a Floyd bridge. The choices there are just about endless, but I'll probably go with the common stuff like what's on my Strat and San Dimas.

Ok, if I were to paint the headstock black like in the VH II record jacket, where in the world can I get one of those old school Charvel decals?

Ebay... I've purchased Kramer waterslides there, I'm sure there are Charvel ones there as well.

I am noexpert, but to me the ability for artifical harmincs, natural harmonics, dive bombs have little to do with the neck..however as Rob said the set up and action will have alot to do with it...

Also, the pickup is a part too. Actives should give you harmonics, but I figure a good high output humbucker will do the trick, and there are plenty to choose from

Ok, last part I need to buy is a Floyd Rose. I'm thinking of saving $100 and going with the Special, as I will probably end up adding String Savers and a brass block. Any opinions on what to get?

If you're still looking for a Charvel decal, here's a maker I found while browsing for other decals. This is the vintage style one found on EVH's black charvel neck, and you can get it in different sizes

Thanks. I found another site that had those. Not sure I can bring myself to pay that much for a decal, though. Can't decide if I want to go with the black headstock or not. Ed had several necks on that guitar, but only a serious fanboy would recognize the black headstock with Charvel decal.

If your going with a Floyd Rose, I would go without the black headstock and Charvel logo, because that headstock was for the standard trem that it originally had, he had a natural unfinished headstock once the Floyd Rose and locking nut was added.

Are they really ? I'm interested , because I want to replace the trems on my Sterling AX40 guitars .

The FR Special is about half the price , so I could do a two for one deal .
