Default Songs on ADKOT that could have worked with Sammy

I was thinking about this the other day, oddly enough, because I was listening to You and Your Blues and thought it sounded like Gary-era Van Halen...a little One I Want-ish. (But much, much better)

This is no slight on Dave...I was just reading the Stay Frosty lyrics in a thread in Main, and the man is a poet, and a superior lyrics-writer.

But what ADKOT songs (music only, not Dave's lyrics) could you imagine Sammy singing over? Just for fun, okay?

For me the #1 example is The Trouble with Never - It's got a real Runaround feel to it...If I had to pick another one, it's Beats Working - for it's Balance-like production.

My first instinctive answer is every one of them.

Sometimes I think the perfect VH would be Sammy singing songs that Dave writes, LOL. There is something magical about the collaboration of Roth and Ed, I just think Sam is a better performer and vocalist.

It's funny, I was kind of thinking the same thing. Dave really does write some really clever, inventive, and witty lyrics. ...but it's not just that...as you said, he seems to bring out the best in songwriting from Ed (well, Ed's work is more ferocious, some may not prefer that style)...and Dave seems to sing with the music, as opposed to Sammy singing opposite the music, if that makes sense.

Not a Sam and Dave war...Disclaimer is that I love Sam Van Halen too...and think he is the superior live performer as well...

All of them, but they would not have reworked any of the songs off the demos.

I guess in some ways, it is somewhat surprising that Ed didn't break out any of the demos for any of the Hagar albums (that we know about). Was that out of respect to Dave? Maybe he didn't want to mess with the royalties for Dave? We know he worked on some of the tunes from 5150 with Dave, and it didn't seem to bother him then to use some of that stuff (I think I've read about Summer Nights the most) with Dave.

Isn't Take Me Back (Deja Vu) a reworked riff? I'm sure there are a few others that we don't know about

Yes but in many cases on ADKOT, it’s the difference between “Riding Along in My Automobile” and “School Days”.

I think Sammy could have sang on any of these songs but I think the vibe would have been completely different for better or worse. I’m happy with the way things worked out. A Dave led album was way over due and they did a nice job. The Van Hagar thing had run its course IMO.

I agree. Just a fun topic (to me). I find it very interesting that Ed seems to write different for Dave and Sam. ADKOT sounds like a Van Halen with Dave album, as did the two new ones on Greatest Hits. So, it got me wondering...are there any that sound Sammy-ish where you could picture Sam singing them? And I really feel strongly about Trouble with Never being one of them.

"Beats Workin'" is one of the most underrated songs on "ADKOT". It sounds like sort of a hybrid of "Feel Your Love Tonight" and "DOA" ...

Guitar wise it is. Phenomenal track by Ed. But vocally very tough to listen to. By far Dave's worst ever with VH.

VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

    We all have our opinions , so here's my take on this ;

Dave absolutely owns the vibe and attitude on YAYB , As Is , and Stay Frosty !!!
I can't imagine Sam bringing anything cooler to those tunes . I can see Hagar singing over any of the other music on ADKoT .

I think As Is and Stay Frosty are all Dave. I personally do not like YAYB and wouldn't even want Sammy to lend his vocals to that tune.

It's all good . To each their own .
YAYD is (to me) a really good tune . I've always liked it , even since the first listen . Dave does some creative stuff with the lyrics .

Don't hate me , but I got a similar vibe from Gary's input for "One I Want"

Both tunes have an interesting play on words , IMO .

    no.

the intro is the same as the song show no mercy but it's played on an acoustic (obviously) the main riff for the song isn't the same as anything we know about.
