Trader Joe's drops black-neighborhood store plan

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Trader Joe's grocery-store chain has dropped a plan to open a new store in the heart of the city's historically African-American neighborhood after activists said the development would price black residents out of the area.

The grocer, whose stores are found in urban neighborhoods across the nation, said Monday it wouldn't press its plan, given community resistance, The Oregonian (http://bit.ly/1n7Jyqb ) reported.

"We open a limited number of stores each year, in communities across the country," it said in a statement. "We run neighborhood stores, and our approach is simple: If a neighborhood does not want a Trader Joe's, we understand, and we won't open the store in question."

The Portland Development Commission had offered a steep discount to the grocer on a parcel of nearly two acres that was appraised at up to $2.9 million: a purchase price of slightly more than $500,000. The lot is at Northeast Alberta Street and Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and has been vacant for years.

Critics said the development would displace residents and perpetuate income inequality in one of the most rapidly gentrifying ZIP codes in the nation.

The Portland African American Leadership Forum said the development commission had in the past made promises about preventing projects from displacing community members but hadn't fulfilled them.

It sent the city a letter saying it would "remain opposed to any development in N/NE Portland that does not primarily benefit the Black community." It said the grocery-store development would "increase the desirability of the neighborhood," for "non-oppressed populations."

Mayor Charlie Hales and the urban renewal agency's executive director, Patrick Quinton, signed a letter in January that described what they said was the commission's contributions "to the destructive impact of gentrification and displacement on the African American community."

Trader Joe's is based in Monrovia, Calif. Its store would have been the anchor of a two-building development that included space for four to 10 shops and 100 parking spaces. A company owned by African-Americans in Portland had been slated to build it.

Hales said Monday it was too soon to determine what might happen to the vacant lot.

Yeah I just don't get this mindset, but there's a reason why these communities are living in squalor, and it's not because there are influential local leaders brimming with great ideas.

when Pres Clinton left office and announced that he was opening an office in Harlem the same thing was predicted.....but it was happening anyway, all those beautiful old buildings and parks were going to get regentrified...the prices of the buildings and the profit that could be made from condos was just too enticing

once Clinton left the neighborhood people were glad because they were hoping the rents would start to come down! didn't happen

You do realize that if the world had that kind of thinking all over, we would still be in the dark ages?

Trader Joe's pays their people extremely well, you would think a low income neighborhood would love to have the opportunity for some higher paying jobs.

Isn't that a sad commentary on society? A new employer is willing to come in and bring jobs to a shitty area, they will likely be followed by other employers (who also bring jobs with them) and the people most likely to fill those jobs say "don't come here because we want this area to remain cheap and shitty".

Maybe the people in that community just don't want to go out and get a job. They just want to keep sucking off the tit of government. Maybe they just don't want white people infiltrating their neighborhoods.

So let me get this straight, if I open up 10 Popeye's chicken franchises in Laguna Beach, are the property values going to drop?

I've lived in low rent areas that have been refurbished, and had to move because my rent was jacked up so high. A lot of low income wage earners live in those areas, and those jobs you're talking about are the same low income jobs they have now.

Trader Joe's isn't. They pay EXTREMELY well in comparison to other grocery store chains.

But, I have a question. What's the answer then? Don't bring in high paying jobs because they will raise the rent...but hey, why don't we have any higher paying jobs?

If I had the fucking answer I wouldn't be living in the hood myself! Living wage as opposed to minimum would be a good start. Childcare and job training would help too.

so basically the answer is just for ghettos to remain ghettos forever. That's the plan?
