Default Do you agree 91 to 93 were VH at their best live?

I'm forever watching bootlegs from these years, and from the 2nd leg of the "Balance" tour. I know some fans will not agree with me, but to me, the chemistry and musicianship was spot on during these years.
"5150" tour was fantastic and so was the "OU812" tour, but it seemed from 91' everything just fell into place and may I say it, PERFECT!!!
I'm not just saying this either, cause I prefer the Hagar era.
I know Sammy didn't sing much of the older Dave stuff, but they brought in some cool jam sessions, did a few covers like "Mississipi queen", "Waiting for the bus", etc and just loved havin' fun night after night.
I loved how Sammy brought in his acoustic solo spot too and did "Eagles fly", "Give to live" aswell.
I'm a bit pissed that "Live Right here Right now" didn't have the right production and sounded muddy, but I can always go back to the bootlegs from that period. Huntsville and Knoxville from the "F.U.C.K" tour just show how energized and pumped they were.
In my opinion, they were at their peak live, I wish that had of kept going through the years, but that's how it is.
The '98 tour was great, cause of the setlist with the welcoming back of "Romeo delight", "I'm the one", etc, but the 91 to 93 years are fantastic memories that will never fade.
    They rocked during these years.
"Theres only one way to rock" ruled live.

I agree 100% that Van Halen was at its best live '91-'93 and on the majority of the Balance tour. The music and vocal performances were the band's best ever, even considering the mythical '81 Oakland show.

I still say Ed was at his smoking best on the LWAN solo. Damned near perfection and his sound was money.

The best I ever heard the band play was on the VH3 tour funnily enough.

Never saw them pre-Sammy - thought they were great on the Carnal Knowledge and Balance Tour. Not so much after that.

Except Eddie wasn't as great of a performer during those years. It was like between OU812 and VH3 he cut his jumping and other stage moves into 1/4.

He couldn't jump for a lot of that because of his hip issues. It was so bad on the Balance tour he had to sit on a stool some nights.

Of the tours (1984 was my first tour) that I saw I thought his best playing was 93.

Listening to those I feel that the energy wasnt there that they had in 78-79. In 81 I think VH was in their prime in all aspects, the 81 Oakland footage has unbelievable live performances. I also feel that the band members styles had changed by FUCK, and personally I much preferred Eddies early blues based style compared to the high gain, tapping reliant style of the FUCK period (I do really like that style as well, just not as much) and Al was less intricate sounding by this time, which something I have really noticed. These are no doubt great recordings, but I feel they are not the best VH had, Id say late 70s-81 and 5150 are better for me, however these are better than 82-84 and 95 onwards for me

The band was at their best on the '80 and '81 tours, no question.

If you want to just stick to the Hagar era tours, imo the 5150 tour and the last leg of the RHRH tours featured the band at the top of their game w/Sammy.

Quite honestly, I was never impressed with any of the bootlegs or the PPV broadcast from the Balance tour. It didn't help that the album is my least favorite VH album next to VH3 and they dropped the best song off that album (Don't Tell Me) from the set the last few months of the tour. Eddie's tone was at the point where it was too processed and far removed from his old late 70's/early 80's tone. The one show I caught early in the tour, Eddie was not at his best (the LA Forum show where he had trouble with his guitar during his solo and threw it on the stage in a fit) and there was obvious tension between Hagar and the band.

True, but the fact still remains it took away from the performance. I saw him in Cleveland with the stool--painted red, black, and white (which was pretty sweet).

VH is an absolutely amazing live band. Throughout their entire career.

But when they peaked?? I don't want to discount any tour or era, but I have old video and audio recordings. Trust me on this... '78 - '81.

The Balance tour was without question the worst tour of their career up to that point.

I still went to a ton of Balance shows. Had a GREAT time. But my goodness, no.

A big level below the '86 - '93 tours, IMO. Leffler had died, tension was growing big time, way less band interaction on stage. Clearly some of the magic of the previous tours with Sammy was gone. The Balance tour was very long and very slowly got better as it went along, but this wasn't the VH of '86 -'93 IMO.

I guess you could really look closely at just one thing or two aspects, like if you loved Eddie's guitar tone, or you though Alex was playing better than ever, or something like that. But as a whole? This tour was not the Sammy era at it's best.

But it was still a huge tour that made lots of money and made people happy. I'm sure not saying it sucked!
