Default Alex Van Halen voted in MD Greatest Drummers of All Time!

Finally some recognition for this great and underrated musician. Surprise not one read about this yet.

Modern Drummer is one of the most important Drum magazines, if not the most respected. MD has always given props to AVH, even calling him the archetype of hard rock.

Votes were from readers and the list was finalized after counting lists from voters.

Edward always is on top tens, but Al was always excluded by reasons I don't understand. Even here he is underrated.

Congratulations Big Al!! As a drummer, he is one of my main influences. Some others, from Buddy Rich to Jeff Porcaro, were also included, so I'm happy.

These lists are not that important afterall, but seeing Alex get some respect, is great!

As far as Rock drummers go for technical ability and overall feel and groove he is top 4 in my book ...

Sure there is 100's more advanced, faster, heavier, and technically better rock drummers on this planet, but I firmly believe its not what you can play, but what you play and when. In that regard Alex Van Halen is right there are the very top with the likes of ...

He's really a jazz drummer who plays rock imo. Congrats Rev Al. Some of us knew you were great in 1978 lol.

If he were NOT voted among the top 50(!) drummers of all time, then we'd have a situation.

Good for Alex. I'm sure even to him it is nice to have the recognition. Not once can I ever remember people saying that Al phoned in a performance, kind of like a few other guys in the band. He's as solid a drummer as there ever was.

Al has always been underrated and often forgotten because of Ed.

I have always loved Alex's playing.

    I kind of dig that he's a whack-a-do too...kind of a pseudo-intellectual type.
"Did you know that Starbucks isn't in the coffee business, they are in the milk business?"
The guy follows the beats of a different drummer.

Another point...Alex is the only one - ever - that I know of that hasn't done something outside of Van Halen. No side projects. Just all Van Halen. If he isn't playing for Van Halen, he isn't playing, right? Even Mike did some bass or backgrounds for some 80's poser band back in the day...I can't remember who...Autograph or something?

When my friends and I get into an 80's style who's the best conversation, someone will always mention Peart...and I love Rush and Peart..and think he's awesome...but even though they are monster rock drummers, they are so different, and I just prefer Alex's style.

I remember reading in excerpts from Sam's book (the unreleased one, not Red) that Sammy wanted them all to take Peyote and investigate other beats and what not. This is an area I disagree with Sammy about. I think Al is the last thing you tinker with regarding Van Halen.

Oh, one last thing...I don't think that's Al playing drums on a lot of Van Halen 3. I think it was Ed's solo album...and it wouldn't surprise me to learn that half the playing was Ed and not Al. It just didn't have the same umph.
