Default Advice That Has Changed Your Life -

I'm curious about advice that has changed your life. Mine pertains to being a guitar player, however - yours can be about anything.

I've been playing for almost 25 years now which all began with 4 solid years of quality lessons from Jr. High until graduation. In all humility I can say that I am extremely good.

Before I played, I never really was exposed to rock music - not because of my parents or anything like that (although I was raised in a Christian home), but I simply didn't have any real interest.

But once I started playing, I started listening to all my older brothers CDs, mainly a healthy dose of: Def Leppard, Scorpions, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, and movie soundtracks, such as Dune and others.

Deep within my mind, I still hold guys like Al Di Meola, John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert and the like as the standard to strive for with their impeccable alternate picking, speed, and discipline.
However – I have come to realize, as of late, that if I were to be as good as those guys, I don’t think I would dig my style so much. Actually, I’m not so sure I ever really did. So recently, a piece of advice
I read deeply impacted me. It released me from the bondage of what I ‘thought’ was the goal, and allowed myself to focus elsewhere. The quote is as follows:

Everybody is really good at something. Everybody is strong at something. You’re a musician, there’s something about what you’re doing that has a unique nature. You need to find what that is
and then exaggerate it... You need to find what you’re really good at and then exaggerate it. – Steve Vai quoting Tom Waits

Therefore – I am now proud that I am very ‘freestyle’ on the acoustic, and I’m also very happy to know that I have a knack long melodic and beautiful David Gilmore-like solos and not have to get tripped-up
over the fact that I employ economy picking over alternate picking. I’m afraid I have been concentrating far too long on a goal that perhaps was more perpetuated amongst a circle of “guitar elitists in the know” versus
    “guitarists who are musicians”.

Anyway – that a bit of advise that is changing my musical life right now.

    You?

My Dad told me a joke once that kind of fit a situation. I don't really remember the situation that well, but the joke, and it's point have stuck with me.

Pappa Bull and baby bull sitting on top of a hill looking down at the heifers....baby bull says "Dad! Dad! Let's run down there and fuck one of those Heifers!!" Pappa Bull looks at him, raises an eyebrow and responds "...nah, let's WALK down and fuck ALL of em'"

Funny, but lots packed in to that crude bit of humor when you think about it. Patience, wisdom, confidence etc.

Not sure if that's the most impactful or not, but it's what came to mind.

A guy I knew said that when he was walking out the door with his bags packed on his way to college the first time, his dad patted him on the shoulder, looked him straight in the eye, and told him: "Son, dress sharp and don't be an asshole."

On a more serious note, when my Dad passed away when I was in high school, my sister's friend relayed a quote that has held true to this day in regards to losing a parent (or someone close): "It's like losing your arm. You never stop wishing it didn't happen but you get used to the reality."
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

    I've always followed this:

" Always do what makes you happy"

Now I'm not saying you screw over friends or family while doing it but when it comes down to it always do what makes YOU happy. Trying to please everyone else will eventually bite you in the ass.

I'm 40 and it's worked for me so far. And yes I'm still single. And happy.

A: Eddie Van Halen hands down he threatened all the stage hands that if we wernt all pushed to the side when he got off stage that he would "bash our faces in"

My dad always tells me that. Which makes me wonder whether he regrets having me and my two siblings.

Best advice I ever got was from the manager at my old job. He said "Everyday we are confronted with 1000 decisions. Each of these can be boiled down to two options: we can do what is right or we can do what is easy."

People need to know it's ok not to have children. In my opinion, if you are American and either you or the person you intend to fuck is not educated with at least a Bachelor's degree, do not have children (granted certain circumstances could be considered). If you have substance abuse issues, anger or bitterness issues..don't do that to a kid. There is nothing worse than seeing an unhappy little tyke whose life you know is not going to get better.

Do to others as you would have them do to you.

My Father was a simple man with a simple rule that his three boys did and still do follow.

    Thanks Dad!

The secret to surviving is knowing what to throw away, and knowing what to keep.
    Cause every hand's a winner,and every hand's a loser.
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep.
