    Default Atlanta clusterf**** ice emergency

Ice Storm Strands Thousands in Ill-Equipped South

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/30/us...l?src=twr&_r=1

    http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/28/us/win...her/index.html

ATLANTA — Thousands of commuters were trapped in cars overnight on highways in the greater Atlanta area, hundreds of students remained inside dozens of schools Wednesday morning and at least 50 children spent the night on school buses because of an ice storm that is still gripping the deepest parts of the South.

Although less than three inches of snow fell throughout the Atlanta region, the ice was crippling and its impact unanticipated. Hundreds of students spent the night in Atlanta schools, watched over by teachers, state patrol officers and the National Guard. Cindy Warner, a spokeswoman for the school system in Shelby County, Ala., said in an email early Wednesday that 26 schools housed about 1,500 students overnight. Three hundred adults stayed to monitor the children in the district, which is near Birmingham.

With much of the region under a coat of ice and temperatures not expected to climb above freezing on Wednesday, it was not clear when those students or the thousands of commuters still stuck on Interstates and side roads would be able to make it home.

The region knew the storm was coming. But few seemed prepared for the icing and the volume of traffic.

He asked people to stay off the roads. “We apologize to the public for the inconvenience,” he said. They've apologized for the inconvenience--- so that settles it !!!

In Atlanta, school closing were announced late, giving parents only an hour or two to try to get to their children. Office buildings emptied early, sending a tremendous wave of traffic onto the roadways in the early afternoon, about the time the roads began to freeze. Caught unaware, drivers found themselves at a standstill. Commutes of four miles stretched into six hours and many are still on the road.

Complaints that the Deep South’s major cities and states did not properly prepare for the storm rose quickly.

Residents ran out of medicine, a baby was born to a stranded mother and pleas for help flooded Twitter and Facebook as a region that rarely deals with ice and snow came to a screeching halt during a rare meteorological event that was still icing points this morning as far south as Brownsville, Tex.

“This came very suddenly,” Craig Witherspoon, superintendent of Birmingham City Schools in Alabama, said Wednesday morning. An estimated 600 students in his district spent the night in schools, tended by about 100 staff members.

“All reports for the Birmingham area were that we’d get a light dusting to the south of where we were,” Mr. Witherspoon said. “And the flakes started coming, and then it just poured out.”

That's a tough situation. "The region knew the storm was coming." And I'm thinking the schools should have closed earlier, if opening at all yesterday?

Don't worry the south will rise again.

Always amazes me when people can't figure out what that shiny slippery stuff on the ground is. You know a storm is coming. You know you can't drive in the first place...STAY HOME! It's bad enough in cities where people are used to it and THINK they can drive. I can't even imagine the feelings of road rage I'd have if I was there...lol. It's hard for me to feel bad for them... I probably should. I just don't get it. Guess I'm "spoiled" by the 6+ months / year of subarctic conditions I've been used to over the years. And no - I don't put chains on my tires or have winter tires. It's just called cautious driving.

If there is just a chance of "ice":

    • Fill the gas tank and check fulids and tire pressure
    • Travel to/from work/school with extra water and food
    • Travel with blanket(s) and ice-scrapers
    • Travel with a hand-cranked device that can charge a cell phone
    • Travel with candles and lighters to keep you warm in a stuck vehicle overnight
    • Travel with toilet paper and a pee catcher (for men and womern)

My cousin lives outside of Atlanta. He sent me a couple tidbits by text yesterday.

"[My wife's] boss left the office at 5:05, it's now 8, has gone 2 miles! Traffic nightmare! Southerners can't drive in the snow!"

    and

"another friend of ours has been on the road since 2 trying to get 35 miles!!! Still not home."

The second text was sent at 8:44 his time.

As a Californian, he told me that this is all about people not being able to drive in the weather. He said it is no different than the snow and ice we get in the high desert in CA here where I am, and we only get snow to stick every other year. Six years ago we got a crazy storm--6-8 inches. A 9 mile drive that normally takes 18 minutes took over an hour.

I love it. I'll probably get off Tomarrow too. People are dumb trying to drive today.

Ice storms suck no matter where you are; they REALLY suck if you have no infrastructure to deal with it, motorists don't even have all season tire and have little experience in driving in it...

Good advice. As for driving in the snow/ice, here are a few tips:
    1) when coming to a stop or going downhill, put the car in neutral and pump the brakes to slow down instead of holding the brake steady.
    2) If you start to slide, ease off the gas, don't hit the brake unless you are about to hit something.
    3) Leave lots of room between you and the car in front of you.
    4) When going taking off from a stop or going uphill, try to maintain a slow, steady pace.

Yeah that really sucks about the winter weather down there. My sister and her husband are based down in that area too and she said that everything is shut down. I really hope everyone pulls through.

I couldnt help but chuckle at this today though...

Well, it's like this, folks. People have jobs and classrooms and commitments. Sometimes you can't just say "I'm not going." Sometimes you can't just jump up and say, "Screw this, I'm leaving." Or at least, people don't want to be the only ones whining about it. And then, by the time THE MAN says, "Okay, y'all go home now", it's too late.

And trust me, there are plenty of know-it-alls down here who came from "up there", who love to run their mouths about they used to do it "up there", and then when the roads get icy, they go for a spin and hit stuff just like everyone else.

Ice is ice, and it is what it is.

We go through this about every 3 years. Slowly they get better prepared. In 2021 I imagine we won't have any issues. This weather is why I own a 1989 land cruiser. Get you anywhere and for only 10 bucks I'll get you out of a ditch.

I feel bad for the people stuck on the highway, but watching the news, I found it hilarious, the chaos over 2 inches of snow. (considering we got double that last night and no one blinked) I know they're not equipped for it, but it was still funny as hell watching people get "rescued" over something that millions of others would have seen as just another Tuesday in the middle of winter. But again, getting stuck in a 24 hour traffic jam, would suck ass! Poor bastards.
