Default Is it true Sammy does'nt like touring abroad?

I went to a music store yesterday, checking out some guitars. Got in a conversation with 2 of the guys behind the desk. Big VH/Sammy fans. I was saying "I hope Chickenfoot tours Australia next tour". They said "They wont, cause Sammy doesn't like touring abroad anymore, especially Australia"....
Is this true? Hes done Australia once, back in '98 which was my fave show of all time. I was hoping he'd atleast come back once more solo or with Chickenfoot.
I read he had a blast in the UK cuppla years ago with Chickenfoot.

I don't think Sam likes touring anywhere anymore. Just look at his latest 'tours'.

If this was true, would it be any surprise?

The guy is in his 60's and has seen and done it all. Rich beyond belief. He's winding down...

I don't have a problem with him calling the shots and playing select shows and events as he does. While he hasn't played here in the state of Oregon much the past decade or so, it's nice to know I don't have to hit the road too far for his Tahoe gigs and others.

It's frustrating for fans overseas though, he was a regular in the UK early in his career.

It doesn't seem to tie in with what I heard, after the CF gigs in the UK, year before last.

I chatted at length with their guitar technician, and he said the guys (including Sam) were loving the whole experience; that they found British and European audiences to be really welcoming and receptive to the whole Chickenfoot concept, and that they'd be back as soon as they had some new material - which I hope will be very, VERY soon!

What do you expect him to say?

"Wow, I hate these fucking Brits, but please, keep coming to our shows while I am here!"

The proof is in the pudding. Sam hasn't toured much outside of the US in a long time, and the reason is probably pure business. There is more money to be made from touring the US, and if anything, Sam knows how to make money.

    My God, you're cynical.

Of course I wouldn't have expected the man to be rude - but nor did he have to go into quite as much detail as he did in our conversation.

The "proof is (indeed) in the pudding". Chickenfoot toured over here in support of their last album, and were exceptionally well-received. I see absolutely no reason why they shouldn't tour here again, should they bring out new material.

Sam rarely leaves the US to tour when in Van Halen, his post VH solo, or Chickenfoot.

He is mainly a US artist, and that has served him well. It is just more expensive for a US act to tour overseas, and therefore, most don't do it.

With regards to CF, that is simply not true, DD.

As far as I know, he (they) toured over here in support of both albums - which is exactly what MOST bands do - perform live in order to promote a new album.

If they fail to tour overseas in support of a third album, then I'd be inclined to agree with you. At the moment, however, I don't. (No surprise there, then..!)

I can't think of one American artist besides Elvis when he was alive, who doesn't tour outside the US and I'm not talking about one-offs either. Money is money and funnily enough, non American acts never have the same issue when it comes to bringing their productions stateside.

I think Sammy said that if CF were invited to play on "any" music festival bill that they would do it in a heart beat.

Dear God people, I didn't say he NEVER tours outside of the US. But for Sam, CF, Van Halen and DLR, 90+% of their shows are in North America. Not sure why that bothers people.

Unless you are Springsteen, Bon Jovi or some other uber popular act in which you can go to England and sell out Wembley Stadium, you can make more money touring the US.

As a band, it wouldn't surprise me if Van Halen has played less than a hundred shows in their entire thirty six year career outside North America.

Satch has regularly played a fairly small venue in my neck of the woods (Newcastle Upon Tyne), he packs the place every time.
WASP were supposed to play here a couple of years back but there was some hitch that ended with the concert cancelled.
Meatloaf's played up here in NE UK frequently.
Fall Out Boy are playing in March.
There's a whole list of gig's for this year with US names all over them, both big and small names and this is in the dire North-East not down London or Birmingham.

But America is a much bigger market to break into for foreign acts.

If a band can avoid overseas trips late in their career then I can understand why.
