    Default Essay Vandetbilt suicide

An incredibly tragic story that makes us wonder about the power and responsibility of the press.

what a crazy story. I actually googled it to make sure it wasn't a work of fiction

seems to me like Dr V didn't kill herself to avoid being outed as transgender by a sports writer as much as an unstable person killed herself onher second attempt due to her understanding that she was going to be subjected to a certain amount of public scrutiny that would reveal a number of sketchy business dealings, professional malfeasance in faking degrees, phony credentials and employment background and grandiose stories of undercover operations

a brilliant nut case who devised her own perfect storm of public humiliation

survivor of the Bowling Green Massacre 9-3-2016 BGSU 10 OSU 77

She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.

It's a pretty crazy story where the preeminent themes seem to be

1)a reporter, an occupation fraught with blurry lines based on their job requiring them to dig as deep as they can, in most cases

    2) An individual who seemingly had a fragile identity related to his/her sexual identity and history as a pathological liar.

In the majority of cases I'd be against someone outing someone as homosexual, transgendered, whatever the case may be, but how could he have separated that fact from the numerous lies about credentials? I'm not saying it would have been impossible, but when a story revolves around an invention where's it's very existence is contingent on the inventor's background, how does one tease apart the different parts of a person's life when they're woven so tightly? However, reading into how hard the reporter tried to contact family members and the like, I'm leaning towards "he went too far".

Gosh, what a gripping tale...Fascinating stuff, and well-written too.

I can see a film in this, somewhere along the line...

Well written for sure, but the way the story is constructed and told like a novel about someone's life and death looks like a writer trying to distance themselves from whatever role he/she had in it's conclusion.

Hard for me to answer given I've never faced such a dilemma, I'd be more inclined, I think, to abandon the story. There was no way, in hindsight, for the journalist to separate the product from the person because Dr. V wove the story so tightly.

I'd like to think I'd do the same as you, ATBL...But, then again, who knows, given the circumstances?

I think that once the story got to the point where it was discovered that people had invested in this product and were acknowledging that they had lost their investments, the story had to go in a different phase.

there are so many con artists out there taking advantage of people financially that if you were doing a story about a product and a company, and the person in charge of the company started out by telling you that you were not to meet or pursue a line of questioning about the person running the company it would raise all kinds of red flags

any discrepancy would cause curiosity, but there seems to be one odd thing after the other in this story. I think anybody writing this story would go all Nancy Drew on it. There doesn't seem to be any malicious intent here, but it's a revolutionary product and a eccentric inventor. Good story for golf.

    turned out badly tho
