    Default An interesting what if...

This is just an interesting what if, no need to jump on me....I was just thinking about my two favorite bands, Van Halen and Aerosmith. They both had personnel issues in their first prime stage.

Now the what if is, after Joe Perry left Aerosmith Brad Whitford left and the album they made bombed. Their tours bombed out too. David Lee Roth left Van Halen, they were seeking a singer. Steven Tyler was a talented singer and musician, he could play piano, drums, harmonica, a little guitar, he had charisma. What if Van Halen brought in Steven Tyler to be the front-man after David Lee Roth left? Do you think they would have been as successful as when Sammy joined? Aerosmith was a bigger name than Sammy Hagar in their heyday, Steven was a great singer with a good range. Would the music have changed much?

Just messing with you bro. Who knows how it would have turned out because Tyler's ego may have just been a few notches below Roth's but way bigger than Sam's (back then).

They might have been bigger initially out of the gate, but past that, it depends on the quality of the music.

DLR and Van Halen were very comparable out of the gate, but DLR's star dwindled. Why? Skyscraper sucked. ALAE was ok, and YFLM, while it has it's charm, is just not a mainstream release.

If they put out great records, and with Steven's at the time still incredible live vocals, I don't see why not.

I would however think that Sam was a helluva lot easier to get along with than that diva Steven Tyler.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

I have thought of a similar situation, where Steven Tyler leaves Aerosmith... If that had happened (and Roth had stayed in Van Halen), we'd probably have "Hagarsmith".

Not sure if that would've worked. Interesting 'what if' though.

For some reason I'm liking the sound of this. It would be a slightly different direction for VH...more bluesy maybe? Hearing what Tyler came up with for that crazy riff in Walk this Way, that suggests he could come up with good melodies for Eddie's crazy riffs like Dave did. As was mentioned, Tyler could also play some keys when needed...and Eddie was going that direction at the time. Tyler had a stage persona comparable to Dave...I like it.

Now the personalities...that's where it would get dicey. Also curious if Tyler could have kept up with Eddie on the drug front. He had a big head start...but I remember reading how Dave left Ozzy passed out on the floor one time. ...VH were serious party animals! Tyler may have blown a gasket dropping into a fresh drug culture at the time.

Ed and Steven would have been dead for along time now from the pure Peruvian Flake. This site wouldn't have ever been here.

Dave, Alex and Mike would have found a Korean guitarist that played all of Ed's guitar parts phonetically,
and they'd be co/headlining dates with Journey.

Ya....but it makes up for a lot of sins

Beyond that though - I really did like Knucklebones, Just Like Paradise (sure - pop - but it was fantastic for it's time and still holds up today) and Two Fools A Minute is a fun romp.

I like Knucklebones, and believe it or not, I think Hina is a really well crafted song.

DLR was a horrible producer, Skyscaper made OU812 sound like it had balls.

Two Fools, eh. JLP, can't stand it.
