    Default Disappointing "Decades" tour

Being a huge fan, I was really bummed that Sammy chose to do so few shows on his "Decades" tour. As expected, from what i've seen on-line, he gave the fans their money's worth and the shows were well received.

A couple questions / thoughts that maybe some of you with more insight or different perspective can add light to:

    1) Why so few dates? Nothing else pressing in his schedule..
    2) Shame he didn't bring Jesse Harms back (key's & back vocals). Still Jesse's angst over VH re-union?
    3) Church & Carmassi not up for more dates?
    4) Sam not wanting to pay those guys for more dates?
    5) Did the tour not make money?

I think his approach to this tour speaks volumes to where Sam's head is in respect to touring at this stage in his life. Shame, cuz his vocals are still so strong.

    Thoughts?

Yeah I understand that he prefers smaller tours these days, but when Chickenfoot tours or when he does a 40-year anniversary tour...I think when I drive from Pittsburgh to Detroit to see him, it should be one of 3 shows I attend, not the only show I attend.

His small tours are starting to piss me off. I thought heard him say in an interview "I'll play wherever they want me," or something along those lines. That I don't get. From a guy who exaggerates his sales every time he talks about them, I can't see him downplaying his concert attendance.

Now in Pittsburgh, for the Marching to Mars tour after he left Van Halen he played at a smaller outdoor amphitheater, unlike the big one he used to play at with Van Halen. I heard there were a lot of free concert tickets given away to fill up the place, but who knows how accurate that is. A girl I had a one night stand with in the early '00s said she was given a ticket back in '97 and heard there were a lot of giveaways.

The next tour for Red Voodoo in '99 was at the same place, and pretty full. Then, he skipped here on the Ten 13 '00-'01 tour. What's interesting is that our rock station, WDVE, played all three singles from both of his first albums: "LWL," "MTM," "Both Sides Now," "MT," "Shag," and "Right on Right." When Ten 13 came out, I didn't hear "Serious Juju" once. I actually interned there at the time. I'm sure I asked why but don't remember the answer. Since then, not one of his new songs has been on that station outside of the VH reunion and Chickenfoot. Maybe there was a falling out with his management and the station? Does that kind of stuff happen?

Then the Sam & Dave tour in '02--they played at the big amphitheater. And it was pretty close to full if I remember correctly. Had to been at least 4/5 full, and it's a big place.

He skipped The Burgh in '03 but that was just a mini-tour, and in '04 he was back at the big amphitheater with Van Halen, and it was relatively full. They used to sell out like crazy here and break records during the first half of the '90s. So after their huge hiatus filled with let-downs...that's pretty good if you ask me.

He skipped the '05 Los Tres Gusanos mini tour and returned in '06 with Mike as The Other Half. What's weird is that they played at the big amphitheater (I guess because of the inclusion of Mike)--the same night as the All-Star game that we were hosting! Makes no sense. It was over half-full despite all of that.

That was the last time his red ass has been to Pittsburgh.

There was 1 Foot show scheduled in '09 that was cancelled. That's it.

I don't understand this. He always seemed to be popular and loved here. Maybe not to the same extent as St. Louis or Detroit, but I always thought Pittsburgh gave him love. Maybe I'm wrong? For what it's worth, they still play Chickenfoot on the radio when they release a new song if that means anything.

Do other cities have this issue with Sam?

Hasn't been to the southeast at all since the first CF tour in 09 and solo since 06. And yeah, the small tours are getting annoying. He seems to only play the west and Midwest and maybe a couple random Northeast dates every now and again. I know he's old, but come on. He gets to take his family with him and can stay in a 5 star hotel every night. What's the problem?

I can't imagine the tours make him all that much money at this point in time. He's playing small places, there's no album that's being sold based on the tour dates, etc, He tours cause he enjoys it not to make a living - hence the shorter schedule, he's probably hand picking the dates he wants to play. I'd do the same thing if I were him.

Considering Sams age and wealth its just a hobby now and he does just fine IMO. I would fly to see him in a resort town anytime.

I agree. The guy has plugged his amps in all over America and in other countries for forty years. A fuckin' road dog! Unless he does something with the foot, I see him doing just select shows. What sucks for a lot of his fans is, those shows will probably be in the same markets. If he ever announces a fair well tour, I'm there. Just hope there is reasonably close. Lol. But I'm still there.

Too few dates was a disappointment, but I understood it. What I didn't understand was the absence of 3 or 4 Chickenfoot songs in the setlist.

Yeah, I know he's in his late-'60s and has toured like crazy for 40 years and I'm being a whiner--and I'm happy to travel 5 hours to see a show, but it would be nice if he came here on at least occasion nowadays so I can see him twice per tour more affordable.

Good to hear from a fellow Yinzer. I agree the 2006 should not have been at First Niagara, especially during MLB All Star weekend. Stage AE would be perfect for a Sam show.

I had to fly to NYC for Chickenfoot in 2012.
I don't have a cool signature. Deal with it!

If I had Sam's money, I wouldn't leave the house to get the newspaper, much less tour.

I have no problem with Sam. Unlike VH, he comes to the UK to play, and gets a fantastic reception. Can't wait to see him (and Mikey) again! Make it SOON, please, fellas!

Sam played near Boston in October at a smaller arena that holds approx. 5000 people. There was a very low turnout surprisingly. The local rock radio station gave away a shitload of free tickets and a decent band in Buckcherry opened. There was maybe 2000 people there tops. Great show, but he should of been booked at a smaller venue,

Neither he or the Foot have come anywhere reasonably close to me recently.

Kind of sucks. There are some good clubs he could play at in DC and Baltimore.
