Default Van Halen 1 or 1984 Live Entirety

Saw Def Leppard's Viva Hysteria on AXSTV over the holiday and wondered if Van Halen ever did such a thing, which album would be most suitable for them to play live in entirety. I would say 1984 over Van Halen 1 because of the commercial success of the album.

Rush has also done this a few times in some of their recent tours playing a whole album, but Def Leppard did it in a limited engagement at The Joint and then turned it into a Live CD and DVD.

1984 would be the obvious one because of the 3 "hit" songs on it, but I would imagine that most would want to see VH1 played live. It would be cool to hear them play House Of Pain live though. I doubt they could do Top Jimmy live because of the guitar overdubs...

The Def Leppard bluray is great. I just read an interview with Phil Collen a few weeks ago and he mentioned that later this year they will be back in Vegas and doing Viva Pyromania, so hopefully, they release that on bluray too.

First album, no doubt. It's just stronger all the way through.

    Eruption vs. 1984?

YRGM vs Jump? I know YRGM has been played a lot,too...but does ANYONE ever want to hear Jump again?

I'll Wait vs. anything on the first album? (I like I'll Wait, but come on)

House of Pain is another weak one, IMO. It's okay, but it doesn't stand up to the deep cuts on the first album, like On Fire or Atomic Punk.

    Nah, first album smokes 1984.

Now, hearing the whole thing today, with the state of Dave's voice? That's going to be a leap of faith there. But I guess if they're going to put on a show regardless, let's hear the first album.

This is by no means great but if this dude can pull it off somewhat coherently then I think the greatest guitar player of all-time should have no problem.

VH I all the way, and that is saying something, since 1984 is a great album.

I know a lot of the hardcore fan base is burnt out on the first record, but IMO, it's still Van Halen's strongest album, top to bottom.

VH just about played the entire VH 1 record on the first reunion tour with Dave. I believe the only songs they didn't play were On Fire and Feel Your Love. Now to here them play all the songs in a row like Rush did with Moving Pictures would be mind numbing. VH 1 is one of those records that you would have to take on a desert island with you !!

It probably wouldn't make sense to someone who doesn't play guitar.

There's a reason people say it and why Ed has never tried it, and it's not the overdubbing (which isn't that much). It's not a song you can replicate on one guitar in standard tuning, which is one of the reasons it probably has never been considered. It has nothing to do with skill. You don't hear people doing it a lot because it's funky tuning and most people simply aren't going to go through all that trouble to retune a guitar that way to learn it. It has never interested me for that reason, just not worth the effort.

And if you notice in that video that guy is using TWO different guitars to do the song. The solo is in normal tuning, the rest of the song isn't, and NO you can't just move your hand around and figure it out in the odd tuning the rest of the song is in...it doesn't work that way. So unless you think Ed can run to another guitar to do the solo during the song, or just drop the solo all together (which would be dumb obviously since there really is nothing interesting going on underneath the solo), it can't be played live. I'm sure Ed knew he couldn't really do it justice on one guitar because of the odd tuning and the interesting way they recorded it on the Ripley panning each individual string to each side of the sound spectrum, so they have never done it and I can't see any situation where they ever would 30+ years later.

You piqued my interest to look into this a bit more, having never played this one myself.

    You're quite correct! The tuning:

Both E strings tuned down to D
G string tuned up to A
    B tuned up to C.

But surely Ed has enough guitars to have one "top jimmy" guitar tuned up for this song should they ever decide to play it, or the whole album for that matter.

It's certainly one of the most underrated underplayed songs of their catalogue.

I'm curious did the Atomic Punks play this one?

    Cheers

I'm going to say it again, you cannot do it on one guitar. The tuning of the song is basically an open tuning, DADCD. The normal tuning for a guitar is EADGBE. The solo is in EADGBE, so there is no way to do both parts on one guitar.

No no band has done it unless they have come up with some other lead part, or just not done the solo which is lame in either instance.

Ed also recorded the song on a Ripley guitar which allows each individual string to be its own track, and can be panned all over the sound spectrum which is what gives the song its distinctive sound.

These are all reasons why it's never been done.

He could have for the last 30 years, he probably doesn't want to because he knows it won't sound all that great.

Listen to that other guy's version, yeah the notes are there but it sounds weird. What makes the original cool is the panning of the strings, and I don't think Ed wants to half-ass it.

It's a studio song in every way. Ed knew the minute he wrote it it would never be played live. But that's cool. He had an idea and ran with it and it came out great. Works for me.
