I saw this tour in Hartford and enjoyed Sammy's show more than Dave's. Not that Dave was bad or anything but Sam won on that night.

DLR was just horrible most nights on that tour.

When I saw them, his voice fell into place in the middle of his set for about four or five songs. But the rest was horrible, and he looked and acted absolutely cartoonish.

If you were to look up "washed up cock rocker", it would have be the 2002 version of DLR.

I am so glad I got to see the VH show I saw in 2008 so that the 2002 show wouldn't be the last live show I saw of DLR. It was brutally bad, I was embarrassed for him at the 2002 show I saw.

I saw three shows on that tour. At the very first show in Cleveland, Dave was flat. A couple months later, the show improved.

The problem was that Dave played the same set night after night, he made his band stand behind him and pretty much ignored them for most of the show, and the wig and spandex were ridiculous.

Sam changed the setlist, he had fans onstage, his preview video was better, and he acted like he gave a shit. I grant that he was doing the hard rock Buffett thing and it did get a bit wild, but he pulled it off.

Another thing, Sam mixed in all eras of his career. Dave was going a VH cover band thing, with the exception of Yankee Rose.
I don't have a cool signature. Deal with it!

I was at the OKC show. Besides the promo photos, I hadn't seen many pics of Dave, and I hadn't seen him live since 1984. I was shocked by his appearance. He actually looked older back then, then in 08' and 12'. Too many VH tunes that made it apparent it wasn't VH. Ray Luzier was the highlight of his show for me.

I'm not saying I think that Sammy was better on the tour, but another thing you could add to the list is Dave not talking to the crowd. That aspect is what makes both Dave and Sammy special: they both spend a lot of time BSing with the audience in their own way.

Sammy did it a lot in '02, but not not Dave. He hardly ever spoke at length to the crowd. I think Dave was trying to keep it real, simple, and stripped down. I understand that but...how is talking to the audience not real? It's his voice. It's not pyrotechnics or anything.

I think that definitely made a difference, too.

I remember DLR saying that he wanted to hit the audience fast and hard with this set. But I agree with you, it was just a bad time for DLR, he was a shadow of his former self at that point, and was still trying to look and sing like he did when he was 22.

So the real question here is, was it confirmed that DLR work a wig?

I would say no, I mean his power alleys were 2/3rds of the way back his head. If that was a wig, it was the worst wig in history.

Long bleached blonde hair, combined with being close to fifty years old, combined with a dramatically receeding hairline equals a really bad look. Add that to his poor vocals on that tour, and it wasn't his best moment.

I saw the double-bill at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin.

Sam opened. I went with a group of people, and they all wanted to hit the hotel bar and pool, so we left before Dave was done. I mostly put the trip together, and they were all very impressed with Sammy's show and thought Dave was bad.

Having said that, I thought his band was good and the opener, which I believe was Hot for Teacher was very exciting, because I hadn't seen Dave live since 1986, when I was a very young lad. I was on the lawn, so I didn't really get a good look at him, but I didn't figure he would look like 1984 Dave anyway.

I'm wondering if this show in 2002 actually did anything to hurt Van Halen sales in 2007-08 and 2012-2013...seriously...it might have been a step back for anything to do with Van Halen...not to mention that Mike playing with Sammy pretty much got him kicked out of Van Halen.

So overall the Sans Halen tour was a bust.

    1. Mike got booted from Van Halen for playing with Sam.
    2. Dave sounded horrible, and possible turned off the moderate to light fan base forever.
    3. The novelty of seeing Dave and Sam share a stage never happened AND
    4. The dream of having a Van Halen tour where Sam and Dave could get along was over.

This was my first time seeing either Dave or Sam live. When I saw this show I was staunchly a Dave guy. After the show I realized why some people loved Sam more.

Between the look, the sound, the antics, just...everything...DLR was embarrassing. Sam on the other hand acted his age well, which isn't to say he acted old, but rather he didn't try to wear clown spandex and try to fool everyone with a bleached Gallagher hairstyle.

I'm still more of a Dave guy, but Sam won some credibility with me after not really liking him going in.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Never thought of it that way and those are certainly great points, but I looked at it as a positive thing and was grateful for it. Especially during that 200-year hiatus Van Halen was on at the time. From what I remember the tour was successful. I went to 4 and most were pretty filled up large amphitheaters.

Fair enough. I was excited to see the show, and I really thought, if anything else, it brought the best out of Sammy. Looking at the original video posted, I see a lot of effort on Sam's part. Of course it was 11 years ago, and he was a bit of a younger man, though he was still 54!

    Ummm no.

Having seen 6 shows myself, then reading various reviews from around the country, you will be very hard pressed to find anyone (outside of die hard Dave fans) say Dave blew away Sam on ANY night of that tour.

He was NOT on his game. His voice was not in the best of shape and he basically mailed it in every night. Same set list, same "jack off Jack Daniels bottle" schtick.

I personally feel his ego still told him that him was The Man. He wasn't. Probably the low period of his solo career IMHO..

In the mean time, Sam took the challenge to heart, giving it his best each and every night and we as fans got one of Sammy's best tours ever. Watch "Long Road to Cabo" and you will see how Sam was very intent on outperforming Dave. He still had Jessie Harms in the band (keys and back up vocals) for that tour..

    Mission accomplished!!
