    Default Rocksmith

I bought this game for one of my sons, and I think it is pretty damn cool.

It is akin to Guitar Hero in how it works (the rolling fretboard, with different colors for each string - red for low E, yellow for A, etc.), but it actually teaches you the chords using a real guitar (it comes with a 1/4 adapter that you can plug into your Playstation or XBox) and to therefore learn the songs.

It slows down parts that you are having trouble with and then speeds them up as you get more proficient with it, has video lessons, etc.

For $45, it think it is pretty damn cool. It has a bass, rhthym guitar, and lead guitar "paths". The guitar paths has more "theory" to it as they actually explain more to the chords, etc. The bass path doesn't even name the notes, it really is just tab playing, but that's fine, I sheet read, but I know a lot of rock musicians that don't so I guess it really isn't necessary for the purposes of the game/lesson.

I plugged in my bass last night just for shits and giggles, and learned a couple tunes in no time. And it is actually pretty damn fun. As you master the song, the notes fade and then eventually disappear as you play along with the song as you get it correct and memorized.

Haven't touched on all the features or even tried all of them, but I found it well worth the money and thought I would share in Main as I had seen questions asked about it another thread that I couldn't find with my shitty search skills.

Mods please feel free to move if need be.

I remember getting on heated arguments with my friends about Guitar Hero. We used to play some videogame, but everytime they started to play that game I would just do something else, piss tem off, grab my guitar and play alongside with it etc. Just never played it and hated it for the fact it didn't really teach you anything.

But wow, this one (Rocksmith) seems to be a totally different story... too bad it came about 5 years too late (for me).

The beauty in Guitar Hero to me was generating interest in learning how to play guitar, bass, drums, etc.

For many people it was just going to be a game, but I am sure that many others got turned onto playing guitar or some other instrument by the game, and that is a good thing in my opinion.

I was wondering how close 'Rocksmith' would be to helping people play guitar. Thanks for the review!!

    Raldo -

Everything DD posted above is dead on.

Simply stated, Rocksmith is automated guitar lessons wrapped up in a "video game" package. You can attack it as seriously or as fun as you want.

We got the first Rocksmith "game" for my wife's boys when it first came out 2 years ago (they were 11 and 9). It has lessons, mini-games, a 'career' storyline, unlockable gear (guitar, pedal, and amp simulators), downloadable content. For a $60 price tag, you really can't go wrong with this title.

The best feature of Rocksmith is that the boys see it as a game and not as lessons.

While they don't play it all the time these days (obviously, other games have captured their interests), they actually have become fairly proficient at playing guitar for their ages. They just haven't latched onto the instrument "seriously" yet. I have the feeling, though, that if either one really latches on, they WILL see it as a learning tool and REALLY take off with it.

And yes, they will be getting Rocksmith 2014 later this weekend when we have Christmas at my parents' house. In my opinion, it's still FAR better than any Mortal Kombat/Assassin's Creed/Call of Duty game a 13- and 11-year-old could be getting.

I'm thinking of getting it for my daughter who does have a 3/4 scale Squire that I've been trying to teach her on. She might like the Rocksmith idea more.

I tell you what, I have a lot more respect for you guitar players after playing this game.

I have only just played barre chords with open tunings when I have been pushed into rhythm guitar service.

All these fucking chords are HARD! I have been taught already how you can really play three chords pretty fast in one hand position, for example Em, E maj and Emaj7, but damn, I get hand cramps out the ass on my fretting hand after too long.

Amazing to me you guys can do that for two hours at a time!

I worked in a mom and pop music store from 1999-2011. We absolutely saw an increase in beginning guitarists because of Guitar Hero.

It didn't stick with most of them, but it was great that we saw so many kids want to try it at least.
