I would say no. He had the Bumblebee, the Shark, the star guitar and various others prior to his relationship with Kramer. Kramer built a one off Frankenstrat which resembled his home made one but that doesn't count as a backup IMHO. More like a promotional item.

    Am I right guys?

He did use the Kramer ad franky on stage on occasion. I've seen it on you tube.

I know that for the Shades of Elvis photo shoot he had a Franky with the red kill switch installed and for the Guitar Aficionado shoot Franky didn't have the kill switch in it. Not sure which was done first but if it was the Shades of Elvis one I would say he does have 2 Franky's.

Just asking because I have a guitar body Ed gave his friend at the 5150 studio back in 87.. It is signed by Ed, Jeff Beck and Danny Johnson so I assume this was when Ed was producing the "Private Life" album. It has 0u812 in the signature which is very common in the late 80's. The reason Im asking is because the front of the guitar is the "frankie" design....
I have never seen ed sign a striped guitar that was not his own... any suggestions why Ed would have a second frankie guitar laying around that was already worn/reliced like this?

Kramer built so many guitars for him that it wouldn't surprise me at all.
Could have been a guitar they built him and he passed on it.

That's what I'm thinking. .there are no holes for the pickguard or back plate..the trem cavity is not painted. All the wear on it was before 87...the strap screw is on the back horn not the end..this isn't a normal strat body.

I dont know about extra Frankie's, obviously he had lots of Kramers that are striped. However before Kramer, he said in a GW interview that he did have lots of necks with him on tour. Im not sure when this picture is from, however it looks like he had a few extra bodies with him as well. (Im not sure why he only has 1 or 2 preamps in it, maybe this is a picture from when it being teched backstage?)
Link for the picture: (Dont know how to put a picture in the post)

I know Ed has used the Yellow/Black double neck guitar for a back up in '82. There is footage of him playing YRGM on it floating around somewhere.

the closest guitar to a back up frank I know of is the "Kramer ad frank" as well as all the other kramers they did for Ed in the early 80s that resembled Franky before he started using the Kramer 5150 and the rest of the rear loaded one PUP strats.

I would say that Kramer ad frank would be the one. I have an old Young Guitar mag with a picture of the Kramer ad frank and original Franky side by side and Ed had them mimic the original baby for the ad guitar minus the hockey stick headstock which he liked due to the Shark guitar.

Ed did sign a number of Kramers... much to his regret as people are now trying to pass them off as "Eddie Van Halen owned and played" guitars... it's all bullshit. Just a cash grab.

Anyway, here's the front of that guitar...

...and the back when it was still assembled...

This guitar is not a Franky back-up. Most likely, it was built by a Kramer employee or fan and Ed signed it.
    WGAF?!!
