    China's Smog Problem

China's Smog Problem Is So Bad You Can See It From Space

In case you hadn't heard, parts of China are dealing with major air pollution issues right now. Officials in Shanghai closed schools and halted construction last week as pollution soared to hazardous levels. Concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) reached 602.5 micrograms per cubic meter on Friday, according to the Associated Press. The World Health Organization's safety guideline is only 25 micrograms.

Along with creating health concerns for residents of Shanghai and other cities, the air pollution has also dramatically reduced visibility. Beginning Jan. 1, Chinese aviation authorities will require pilots of domestic flights into Beijing to learn to land using auto-landing technology, rather than divert to another airport during periods of low visibility. Only 18 percent of flights currently leave Beijing on time, reported AP.

Despite the obvious drawbacks to off-the-charts air quality and incredibly low visibility, state-owned media outlets have tried to put a positive spin on the pollution.

The satellite image below was taken on December 7, 2013 and shows smog stretching about 750 miles from Beijing to Shanghai. Clouds or fog are white in the image, while pollution appears as gray swirls, NASA explained.

I've been following this story. It's not just their air...well, OUR air, but the water and the soil.

Their environmental regulations are lax to put it mildly and enforcement is worse.

Worst part is that they are living in an industrial age similar to the late 1700's early 1800's in other countries and those cities were polluted to the point of being unlivable...except to those who were economically unable to live anywhere else

thing is the technology to reduce pollution didn't exist then as is does now...so basically, it's just a lack of caring about the problem in China

She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.

Wonder what the cancer rate is over there? Got to be huge? Dirty air, dirty water, and tons of plastic floating into your lungs?

Smog in LA and Orange county used to be so freakin bad when I was in elementary school that when you ran on the playground at recess, your chest would hurt if you take too big a breath. Through EPA laws and new technology gasolines, the air is about 70% better than it was in the 70's and early 80's so I totally understand what these people are going through.

    China's air pollution blamed for 8-year-old's lung-cancer

An eight-year-old girl becomes China's 'youngest' lung-cancer patient as doctors say high levels of air pollution responsible for her condition

I've been to China. In addition to the very lax pollution controls with regard to their manufacturing - on every block they are burning huge bales of fake paper money to the gods for their religion. The smell of burning paper and incense is everywhere. In addition - almost everyone (young, old, male, female) rides heavy polluting scooters. They will need to make a change.

It makes you wonder....would the world be importing all their (ie, it wasn't as cheap) crap from China IF:
    - Their environmental policy was anywhere near the rest of the industrialized world
    - Their labour laws in place
    - If they stopped monkeying w/ the Yuan?

I'm all for globalization - but the playing field needs to be equal and fair. Getting China to deal with their smog problem is a small start to a massive shift in manufacturing.
Winners come and go; legends are forever.
