    Default "Open"

Open is one of the best songs that Sammy has done in the last decade.

Good lyrics. Good music and guitar solo. I am surprised that he didn't put it on Cosmic Universal Fashion or Sammy and Friends. He definately had room on both releases, and it would have made either one better by its inclusion.

It's on my Ipod, but I don't know if somebody else wrote it for Sammy?

    Here's a live version...

But to be honest, it's not as good as the studio cut, because the studio cut has some dandy guitar work..and I always wondered if that was Sammy soloing in the song...from the live cut, it doesn't look like it, but Vic is playing it safe and easy compared to the studio version..

Anyway, I wonder why Sam doesn't play it live more often and/or didn't include it on an album. I used to half wonder if it would show up on a Chickenfoot album.

the solo is spectacular if it is Vic, IMHO he's very, very improved over when he first joined Sam's band.

it's a great song, I don't see how anyone can say it's not unless they just hate sam.

Sam wrote it, there used to be clips of the band working it up in the studio but I don't know if they are still around.

One of Sam's best solo songs.
"I respect that youre passionate about this but what your saying is complete idiocy..." - MF5150 on McDonald's "preying" on young kids.

It’s a well written song but honestly, it doesn’t do anything for me. I wouldn’t miss it if I never heard it again.

For comparison purposes from the new album, I like Winding Down, Not Going Down, Father Son, Bad On Fords all better than Open. I do realize that half of those songs weren’t written by Sam but I’m not suggesting anything by it.

Of course, to each his own. I can appreciate your opinion. Having said that, I find Winding Down and Bad on Fords somewhat derivative....especially Bad on Fords. Open is so much more original...not just an original song, but I can't think of anything that Sam has done that sounds like it. It has a somewhat serious undertone to it.

I popped the thing in while driving a long distance yesterday and my wife asked who it was. When I told her it was solo Sammy, her response was "really?....I like it." In general, she's mildly a fan of Sammy, mostly through me, and she enjoys the Standing Hamptom stuff more than most.

Love it as well. And I would agree that it's his best solo output in years. Probably why he didn't want it on that turd CUF.

Love it. Deserved to be included on a full album. Wouldn't mind if it was covered on a CF disc.

I'm with you. Very bland song that goes nowhere. I don't see the appeal.

VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

I think it's cool, it starts off with a little "open up your eyes" and then it slowly moves to "open up your mind" and finally "open up your world"....it's very cool when you actually listen to how it progresses and the solo is very, very cool.

I don't think it's the "best" think sam's done since VH but it's one of the best things he's done.

Good song, but I can think of a dozen or more post VH songs that resonate with me more than this one.

Sorry but I can't fathom how anybody could like Bad on Fords more than Open. I know this is all opinion based but to me it's like saying you'd rather have a Hungry Man over a proper meal at Ruth's Chris.

Honestly, it’s probably more of a lack of love for “Open” than an affinity for “Bad on Fords” if that helps make my comment more digestible.

I just don't think it's all that great. I could think of probably thirty Sammy Hagar songs post VH breakup that I like better.

It's ok to me, but that's it. I wouldn't skip it if it came up, but I would never go through my music looking for it.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!
