Default Since it's been awhile has your opinion of ADKOT changed?

it's been a bit since the album was released. I remember when it came out alot of folks were really, really excited proclaiming it to be a total triumph and this and that. Others were a bit less enthusiastic (they were the minority).

so it's been awhile....I admit I thought it was a "good" not "great" cd when it was released. I thought Ed played well, Al was Al and Wolf did a fine job. I thought Dave came up with some clever lyrics for the most part (I really dig the "when was the last time you did something for the first time" lyric) but TO ME his voice was terrible.

I relistened to it yesterday and my opinion really hasn't changed that much but I was wondering how you guys felt now that we're a few months away from the initial release and some time has passed.

    Good topic.

A couple of things are sticking in my mind with regards to ADKOT.

First, I'm not skipping Tattoo anymore. I like it, and I think it's one of the best tunes in terms of being a good match for Dave's vocal abilities and style.

Next, I've been hooked on the end of the album lately...namely Beats Workin and Big River. Dave does sound a bit strained on Beats Workin', but magically it works for me lately.

I've played the shit out of Stay Frosty - I'm kind of sick of it. It's a fabulous song, but anything can get old.

Overall, my opinion hasn't changed. The release far exceeded my expectations and is a solid b+ effort. In terms of the six (7) pack, I rank them this way:

    Fair Warning
    Van Halen I
    1984
    Van Halen II
    ADKOT
    WACF
    Diver Down

    Jolly good.

Still love it, but I also still feel the same way about HBSD. Just can't get into it.

After I caught VH in LA on the tour, I burned out on the album but just recently started listening to it again and frankly like it even more than I originally did when it came out. I think one of the great mis-steps since Dave rejoined the band was not playing "Stay Frosty" in every single show of the ADKOT tour.

Still love it as much as I did the first time.

Tattoo - Skip. WTF was the band thinking letting Dave do that vocal "medley" or whatever the fuck that was. Just gay.
STW - Badass song and still look forward to it coming up on the ipod
YAYB - Decent song, should maybe have been a single
China Town - I think Ihave listened to this song all the way through maybe 2 times.
Blood and Fire - One of the best on the disc
    Bullethead - Great filler song
As is - Love this shit
    HBSD - See above
Trouble with Never - Meh, could take it or leave it
    Outta Space - Like it
Stay Frosty- If Dave didnt do his "Uh huh huh" Jackassery, this song would have put VH back on the map big time.
Big River - My favorite on the whole disc. This song embodies hauling ass, getting ass and being out in the California sun.
Beats Working - Entire song sounds labored. Ed phoned it in, Dave blew this one, Wolfgang's daytripper esque bass solo was lame and sounded like a 5 year old did it and Al sounded like he was all over the place.

That being said, by using Fair Warning as the high watermark and a 10, I love the disc and give it an 8 on the scale. A grand piece of guitarwork and a fine comeback for Ed.

    Still love it.

As with any VH album, there are tracks that I absolutely love and others that I have to search for their value. That being said, I can get sick of any CD if I listen to it enough and it's happened multiple times with all of the VH cds for me--this one's no different. The cure for that is to listen to a different CD or band for a bit to refresh.

I look at it this way: if I ate cake every day I would get sick of it too. Give me a a week or two of straight vegetables and I'll be ready for cake again.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

I still think Tattoo is the weakest song on the disk, I'm really shocked they put that out as a single, especially the first single.

Just popped it back in this weekend after a hiatus. I still like it. I even listen to the beginning of Tattoo before I skip to She's The Woman.

I still think the same about it after a year. That is, lame ass brickwalled production killed what should have otherwise been great stuff. Would love to hear the raw, untouched music before production. It's good for what it is, but doesn't come anywhere near the six pack imo.

They should have went with all brand spankin' new songs and not delved back into the demos. That just showed that they were lacking the creative desire and not enough gas left in their tank. I've said it before and I'll say it again, there's a reason why those songs never made the cut the first time around and were left off.

...and Tattoo? That shit sandwich should never have seen the light of day, much less released as the first single. Talk about giving a bad first impression of a new album. A comeback album at that.

    Still love it!

Tattoo: I have always been in the minority and liked it the chorus is a bit much though as stated by someone else.
STW: Just a stellar VH song no matter how old they are.
YAYB: Very good, like it a lot
China Town: Like the music, Dave is rough in it to me though.
    Blood and Fire: Love it!
Bullethead: pretty good for what it is in the middle of the album.
As Is: Not my fave, but a good rocker
HSBD: I like this one a lot.
Trouble with Never: One of my faves, love the breakdown part.
Outta Space: Just a cool rocking song.
Stay Frosty: Agree about the one that would put them back on map by ommitting the "Uh Uh Uh".
Big River: one of the best on the album IMO
Beats Workin: Another China Town IMO.

It was a great comeback album for Eddie and a great prove himself album for Wolfie. While Al was the usual Al and Dave is still a great lyricist and I'm sure today's technology can help iin his vocal sound in the studio.
So looking forward to what may be next and the direction they go in.
'Old Van Halen, when I was in it-classic Van Halen-makes you wanna drink, dance and screw, right? And the new Van Halen encourages you to drink milk, drive a Nissan and have a relationship.' - David Lee Roth.
