Default Wolfgang owners - help with setup!

Hi, I know there are a lot of guys here with Wolfgangs so I'm hoping you can all chime in. I'm having some trouble setting my new 97 pat pending with 10's.

First is the truss rod. It feels like it is maxed out all the way to the right and I don't want to force it, yet the relief is not where peavey suggests. It doesn't get under .015 ". Customer support has suggested a shim, or putting a washer in between the wheel and the nut, is this necessary and could someone explain it a bit better?

Next is the bridge. It appears to be parallel to the body, and the trem springs have it flush down, but every dive bomb will knock the guitar sharp. I don't understand how the pivots bolts are used to adjust the action when lowering the bridge will just angle it downwards. Putting the bridge at parallel gives way too high action, as seen at the end of the vid.

The action at the last fret is just over 2mm looks real high.

I have an 09 axis that has relief of about .006 using the same measuring technique, the last fret it just as low as the first, and the bridge it just about parallel with 10's, none of the same problems. Is it possible that the PV is just made to suit Eddie's needs in Eb with 9's?

I've included a video to show what I mean, all help is appreciated, thanks guys!

edit: I mean .022 in the vid

Also, the previous owner's setup did not make the strings go sharp when diving IIRC. I didn't have it like that for long.

PV Wolfs and the EBMM EVH were set up in E with .009s from the factory. Ed didn't go back to E flat until his newer EVH line. Might be a DLR thing. I've always wondered how much truss rod movenent there is with the graphite rods in the neck that stop it from moving. Anyway, I played two Archtop Peavey Wolfs set up with .010s. One a Pat pending. So it can be done. If Peavey suggests shimming the neck than that's the move. They know. Sorry I don't know more. I'm a .009 guy.

if it was me i would take it to a shop and have it all set up the way you want it instead of screwing around. then you just maintain it with simple adjustments when you change strings etc.

I use 9's on my FR guitars.
10's on a Floyd Rose trem just feel too heavy to me.

I use 10's on everything non floyd.

I have a first year quilt that I purchased new in March of 1997. Within 2 weeks I switched to 10's. It was so long ago I don't remember what minor adjustments I made but it has never given me any problems in over 15 years of constant use.

I go back and forth from 9's and 10's on my Wolfs with no issues. The only adjustment is tightening the springs on the back when going to 10's and backing them off a bit for 9's. You're sure theres no 'up' play in the bridge when it's tuned up? Like when you pull up on the bar, does it raise the pitch at all? If so, tighten the springs till it doesn't. Other than that, I'm not sure why it would knock out of tune unless the posts are maybe loose. As for the bridge not sitting level, it's not s huge deal if it's at a bit of a downward angle. My special isn't perfectly flush, like yours the action would be high if it was. But it's not drastic enough to mess with shimming.

Thanks so far guys, in the video I said 2mm, I was reading the wrong side of the ruler, I meant 2/16" or 3mm , regardless I noticed that 10's on this guy feel heavier and harder to play than my EBMM, might have to swtich to 9's if I can't get anything else to work.

I was gonna ask you how the 10s felt if they were heavy feeling. Guess you answered my question as I was thinking of putting some 10s on my Stealth but I guess I'll keep it like my EBMM and PV Wolfs with the 9s. Just easier to play I guess.

It depends on the tuning to me. 10s feel better me when tuned down a half step (or a whole). I use the hybrid slinky 9-46 for standard tuning.

Have an appointment with the tech thursday. Can anyone confirm two things here -

I noticed my PV's bridge pickup is a fair bit weaker than my axis. Is this normal.

Also, the wolfgang bridge pickup is weaker than the neck, could some wiring be bad?

    upon inspection

wolfgang bridge pickup distance - no frets depressed

    Low e string
    front of pickup - 4.5mm
    back end - 5mm

looks like a pretty big gap, with the last fret depressed im getting just over 3mm in the front and 4mm in the back, seems more reasonable.

    axis

    front of pickup - 2.5mm
    rear end - 4mm

guess that explains it, can anyone get some measurements for theirs when they have time? When I say front of pickup I mean the end of the white coil and rear is end of the black. Maybe the gap will lessen a lot with the lower action?

I have never personally measured the pickup output on my Wolfgang, but I have read many times that the bridge pickup is weaker than the neck pickup. So at least with regard to that item I don't think you have a problem. Of course the bridge pickup should still have a lot of crunch and bite to it, but the neck pickup just has higher output. I'm sure others can confirm this for you as well. The Axis would have Dimarzio pickups I believe (specially made for that model), which are of course completely different from what is installed in the Wolfgang.

Guitargoalie, your pickup height from string to pickup is spot on compared to mine.
