Default Sammy Hagar - Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Solo?

Is it so ridiculous to think that Sammy Hagar should be inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist?

If you don't have use for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, then this isn't the thread for you. I understand the missteps and the snubs that have turned people off over the years. Not to mention the induction ceremonies should be held in Cleveland, not New York...I went to the building a few years ago, and I really did enjoy the hell out myself. But I digress...

A quick look at inductees suggest that it's not so far-fetched that Sammy could get consideration....Alice Cooper, Lavern Baker, Fats Domino, Tom Waits...

The criteria listed on their website:

"Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artistsí contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll."

If I'm being honest, the only area that I think Sam, as a solo artist, comes up short, is perhaps the influence part...I'm not sure Sam has every done anything to further the influence of his particular brand of hard rock. ...but significance? Sure, look no further than I Can't Drive 55. I mean, if you're going to put Fats Domino in for Blueberry Hill and the Twist, then I think Sam deserves a look for 55, One Way to Rock, and Heavy Metal, to name a few. I think if you look at Sam's solo catalogue, it's an impressive body of work.

(I know some will bring this up too...Montrose should probably get in for their influence, no?)

    Anyway, my thoughts....

I think he's borderline. He's had a long career with a large body of work but the influence thing might hurt him.

as a solo artist? I dunno. AS a guy who's been involved with Rock for 40+ years and has always had a "decent" following? yes.

he's in there with VH...as one of his biggest fans I wouldn't have a problem with things if it was left at that. I'd be thrilled for the guy if he did but it won't tear me up one way or the other if he never does (that might be the most wishy washy posts in the history of posts right there).

I went through the R&RHOF a few years back myself. I'm not familiar with the snubs etc. I think they do a good job at representing the history aspect. I see music as a series of building blocks, each artist brings something to the table which influences their generation and those after. I think R&RHOF understands that.

That being said, I don't get the point of an induction- after all, Michael Anthony has a bass in there, Joan Jett has a ton of stuff in there. Heck Colby Callet has the sweater from her debut album in there and she's only been around within the last ten years.

Long story short- absolutely Sammy should be represented. Montrose should be represented. Chickenfoot should be represented.

Montrose alone should be in there. Using my building blocks analogy, they influenced VH. VH in turn, influenced a ton of bands.

Few people have developed such an influential persona in rock n' roll. His work as a solo artist is incredible. So, yes, he should be inducted as a solo artist. That being said, he already made it and allowed Ed, Al, and Mike to ride his coat tails into the RRHF.

For being a successful artist aside from his work in Van Halen for this long? Hell yeah. Eventually.

Plus, he's one of the small amount of hard rockers who is still a household name. That's gotta mean something.

And he's still putting out significant music (Chickenfoot) in his mid-60s.

    That, and because he rules.

    No.

I'm one of Sammy Hagar's biggest defenders and supporters around here, but him going in with VH is enough for me. His solo catalog simply doesn't justify it at all.

He's recognized in the Hall already. I'm good with that.

I understand your vote for "no". But ridiculous?

Sammy seems to be gaining some "late" respect in the business. That isn't based on anything but my perceptions, by the way.

The sad thing is that if it actually happens, it may be when he's either at the pearly gates with his flip flops on, or when he's 95 and still singing about vaginas.

as a solo artist, yeah it's ridiculous. Having a so-so solo career pre VH and then doing a Jimmy Buffet impression after does not make one hall worthy. I love Sammy but if that's the case to get you in then we're really opening it up for a tonne of other artists. He was part of an amazing and influential band and he's rightfully part of the Hall as VH. But as a solo artist, he's not close for me.

Not that i wouldn't boot 35% of the current hall of fame out but adding another unqualified artist doesn't help the hall.

Not a dig at Sam, but if he hadn't been in Van Halen his name wouldn't be out there today like it still is.
If Sam solo gets in then others that are similar like a Rick Springfield should also be in and I just don't see that happening either.

Even someone like Bryan Adams is probably on the bubble but yet I think some day he will get in mainly because he has had some very big hits with a couple movie soundtrack songs.

But like someone else posted, Sammy really doesn't have the influencing others factor working for him. I cannot think of one person that has come out and said that Sammy was a big influence of theirs.

Now ask me if Eddie or Dave are viable potential HOF inductees solo I would say Eddie yes and Dave no.

Eddie should be for his overall influence on guitar players since 1978 and for his solo on Beat It alone plus other lesser known solo stuff porn soundtrack aside.
Dave really stopped being an influence once he left VH and later became a total parody of himself until rejoining the band where he changed his look and toned down the schtick a bit while still leaving n some classic Dave material in his act.

I might say it differently. Sammy may have had a better chance at going in as a solo artist if he was never in Van Halen. Think about it.
