    Default "Going Down"

Great classic blues song. And Sammy's done it with different artists...

...with Schon, Anthony and Smith on his latest solo record:

...and with Jerry Garcia live in 1989:

Love both versions, but there's just something cool about jamming with Jerry.

I think I've mentioned this before, but check out the similarities between "Going Down" and "Bigfoot".

Yes! I noticed that right away.

    Too similar.

I only like the first 30 seconds or so of Goin Down from Sammy and Friends...

Here's Freddie King's version from 1971 which popularized the song (and Eastbound & Down viewers will recognize it as the show's main theme):

Chickenfoot (dig Mikey's intro what a bass player and a class act!)

This is the type of thing that if things had progressed past 1996 with Sammy you wonder what could have been.

I only say this because Van Halen was excellent with cover songs as an accentuation to their original material with Dave (and doesn't take away anything from the originals of the six-pack) but they never quite fully explored it during the Sammy era.

EDIT: This is the reason I wish Sammy would take a cue from the notebook of his buddy Bob Weir and the Dead and turn Chickenfoot into a jam band. Play two sets without an opener and add covers to the Chickenfoot repertoire with extended jamming. Play covers amongst the originals and change it up every show. What a tour that would be!

This song shows what IMO went wrong on the Sam & Friends album: This is surely one of the best songs on the disc, but it's also only a cover tune that he has been performing for a long time.

It would have been good as a bonus track, like he did with the live version of Space Station No 5, but not the 10th song of an already very short album.

I like it but it starts to really drag on for me after the first minute or so. I just think it’s more suited as a live concert jam and not for a recording – there just isn’t enough to the vocal part. I get it… you are going down…down, down, down, down. Next!

Schon’s playing on this track does remind me of Eddie for some reason. Is it a bit like "In n Out"?

I just have one thing to add:

Sam can still just fucking wail live at the mic. It is just almost impossible for a hard rock signer after forty plus years to still be able to do that night after night, but somehow he does.

Him and Ronnie James Dio are about the only two guys I can think of that didn't lose much of their voices when they got into their sixties. Most hard rock singers are just shells of their former vocal selves at that point.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

Paul Stanley is far from a shell IMHO, and Robin Zander.

And for the metal community, Udo Dirkschneider and Rob Halford both sound good still.

Want examples of guys who are awful? Vince Neil (pretty much always was), Jon Bon Jovi is just atrocious these days. Joe Elliot doesn't sounds very good either.
