Default Seat belts will be required soon for charter bus passengers

WASHINGTON — Charter bus passengers will soon have to wear a seatbelt.

The final ruling came down Wednesday from the Nation’s Traffic Safety Administration.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has debated about requiring seat belts on motor coaches since 1977.

U.S. Transportation Secretary and former Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx said Wednesday’s ruling is a significant step to improve motor coach safety.

The safety agency said that requiring lap and shoulder seatbelts means it could reduce crash deaths by up to 44 percent.

The law only pertains to charger buses, it doesn’t apply for school or commercial buses, like CATS buses.

Beginning in November 2016, all buses must be equipped with seat belts.

For years, safety advocates and the National Transportation Safety Board has called for seat belts for passengers on the large buses.

Studies have found that in many bus crashes, deaths are caused by people being ejected from the bus.

But the Transportation Safety Board said more still needs to be done.

They are pushing for stronger windows that don’t pop out during collisions.

Those regulations are expected to be due by September 2014.

I've never understood why in my car that my kid needs a special kid seat and belt but on a bus it's "hold on for your life".

Here's an article I found that sheds light on why. I too wondered why buses were exempt. Apparently seat belts do not make school buses safer.

This part is the real reason imo. Its ALWAYS a money thing.

Another answer why buses do not have seatbelts is cost. It is estimated that adding seatbelts to buses would add between $8,000 and 15,000 to the cost of each bus . In addition, seatbelts would take up room currently used as seats, meaning that each bus would have fewer seating places. The additional room in the bus taken up by seatbelts would mean that bus fleets would have to increase by as much as 15% just to carry the same number of people.
