    Default Greatest Hits

Aside from (very) strangely not including "JLP" on the DVD (which still blows my mind and makes zero sense), anyone notice anything else funny about the DVD?

Still glad he released it though!

Not that it was well-put-together, not that the choice of songs was normal (is it ever for a Best of/GH?), not that the choice of videos on the DVD was normal or especially the VHS quality of the long-awaited DLR solo home video collection, and not that there were new songs on the com-pi-lation or anything, et cetera et cetera as the man himself would say...you follow?

But it's interesting that this Greatest Hits wasn't advertised on any of the sites outside of being mentioned here and on the Roth Army forums.

He is VH's current frontman, but no news of it is to be found on the main page at Roth Army, VHND, or even his very own official site(!). I see it's at least for sale on the VHND-affiliated Van Halen Store.

Not a big deal, it's not a Van Halen release, but still, just odd.

I know he put one out in '97, but even though time flies when you're older--that was a long time ago--and seems like a good time while being back in VH to release one, but why no care?

Shit, no one even cares about this thread. Alright then.

...nothing from after "The Best" like his fan-favorite DLR Band album, he excludes one of his biggest videos where he did the epitome of Jungle-Studness by climbing mountains higher than Rocky did in Rocky IV--and you know he's big on that because he always talks about and show pics of that kind of stuff to this day, either way, what rock star is cool enough to do that?!--yet not included.

To capitalize being back in VH? Now that he's back in the band, any of his new music will be at the top of the Billboard Charts again when released, he will perform to sold-out (or close to it) arenas for here on out...so why even do it if you're not going to try to put out something decent or have it promoted?

    Just weird.

My understanding was that it had some of DLR'sa artwork in it.

That might be worth it when it is in the bargain bin, but I just don't see the point of Greatest Hits albums anymore, especially multiple ones.

Just go on iTunes and make your own.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

I'd rather see a live album from Dave. Maybe pic songs from different tours.

It still mystifies me how the majority of acts (or maybe just the ones I like) can botch a greatest hits package.

I don't understand what is so damn hard about it.

Pick the hits, pick the deep cuts that are fan favorites, throw a few extras or unreleased bonus material, maybe have the artist write up a little tidbit about each song, etc.

I love that shit, when they get into what inspired the song, the process of it, little handwritten notes on napkins, how many takes it took, etc.

what a weird album - all four songs from Crazy From The Heat and once again no "Damn Good"? No "She's My Machine" - either on the CD or the DVD? As it has been said, is it really this hard to put out a proper "greatest hits" collection?

How does Damn Good not make it onto a "DLR Greatest Hits" package?

    Arguably his best solo song.

I personally think She's My Machine sucks, so I don't miss that one.

Most Greatest Hits packages are a legal web of licensing, permissions, etc. that leave the fan feeling a bit screwed.

My guess is that this is some form of Warner-Reprise-Rhino package. I would have loved it if Dave had reacquired the rights and could produce a package without the recording label's input or limitations. If music rights and labels weren't involved, I suspect we would see "Slam Dunk," "Tight" or the original Howard Stern song, and the big band "Ice Cream Man" from the Diamond Dave album. Perhaps the bluegrass version of Jump. It would be colorful and eclectic.

A greatest hits done in the style of The Roth Show would be spectacular. This is "eh." I'm skipping for now.
