    Default Feelin'

I feel like I'm sort of alone with this song, because I love it. Not a typical VH song but it seems to fit well on Balance. The intro is awesome, I love the very slightly distorted guitar. And the chorus is just awesome. It speeds up and I love how Ed incorporates some of his live noodling into the solo. What are your opinions on this song?

You're not alone. It's a great song but pretty friggin' dark. I think it's funny how Fair Warning is considered a dark album because it's got nothing on Balance in that respect.

The highlight of Feelin' is Ed's solo. Off the hook.

One of my fave's off of Balance. I love how it just keeps building until that great guitar solo. A song where Sammy's vocals fit perfectly with Ed's music.

Fair Warning, I think, is considered a dark album purely for the tone and the sound. Not necessarily the lyrical content or how the songs are structured. When ever I put on FW, I feel like I'm in a poorly lit alley way or a small room with one hanging light that's dimming as the album progresses. Not much lightness on the album in terms of tone.

Feelin - The best solo he's ever laid down for a song, IMO.

Not a fan of this song. I'm just not "Feelin'" it ...

I like it, but I've never loved it.

    The solo is killer.

I just don't find it very melodic, and I'm not talking about that in a puss/wuss way, like Can't Stop Loving You (to some of you)...there's just no hook.

    But I don't skip it.

It kind of strikes me as the prequel to Year to the Day on III.

It is a great song. It moves me on an emotional level in regard to the subject matter. It also moves me in regard to the absolute awesome arrangement and guitar playing. It compelled me to learn it note for note and it was the catalyst for making me go back and listen to all the Sammy years.

I have never been a sappy love song kinda guy and Sammy really didn't do me any favors with all that. But, "Feelin'" inspired me to go back and get close to Eddie's guitar parts and appreciate the badass volume of work he and Sammy did together!

One of my favorites on Balance. In fact, it is sort of my go to on the album.

I love everything about the song, but my favorite parts are the intro, and the whammy bar dive right before it launches into the chorus. Wow!

I love your description of the poorly lit alley. I've always wondered if the art work is responsible for the perceived darkness of FW. I mean, Mean Street and Dirty Movies are dark, but Sinner's Swing, Unchained, and So This is Love aren't. I guess When Push Comes to Shove could be considered dark--talk about a solo. Yowl!

I think some of the lyrics and notes are dark on Balance. And, the black and brown colors on the cover art reflect the rich dark tone of Ed's sound. Heck, I don't know.

Anyone who disses Sammy's lyrics should listen to "Feelin'"...I've always thought it was about his relationship with / perception of Eddie at the time.

Others will disagree with me, but I think the line, "Grow it long, shave it off", is a particularly explicit reference to what was happening in the VH inner circle during this period. It was around this time (according to Sam's first, unpublished book) that Ed almost had a complete mental breakdown, and shaved his hair off (one of his trademarks, remember), as a result.

Lyrics aside though, it is a GREAT song - truly powerful, and a foreshadowing of the depth and darkness that was to come with "Humans Being", in my opinion.
