    Default MTV: 1981-1992

I know we've had plenty of threads bemoaning what M-TV became, but I don't know if we've had any purely celebrating what it once was, and this is what I hope this thread can be. Not just an outlet for posting some of your favourite old videos, but also your own personal memories of those videos, the VJs, the few non-video shows, the era - whatever!

I don't think I had much exposure to M-TV until 1984 as the cable system didn't carry it and I was in college anyway, so only occasionally saw bits of it if I was at somebody's house where they had it and had it on. Once we had it, my oldest step-brother (are they still your step-siblings when your parents are no longer married?) and I would sit there almost Beavis 'n Butt-head style and critique them. One of our favourites was "Rebel Yell" and Billy Idol's jacket which looks as if it had (barely) survived an explosion. Guess that's why it always used to puzzle me when people didn't like the video segments on "Beavis and Butt-head" - to me they evoked memories from only a few years earlier.

Back then, it was THE thing to do. Throw on MTV and watch videos, none of the other crap they have on these days.

It was on this MTV (as with just about all of us born prior to 1975 anyway) that I saw the mutherfuckin masterpiece known as "Unchained" as filmed in Oakland, Ca.

    I've never been the same.

Prince, Van Halen, ZZ Top, Michael Jackson. MTV News, the moon man, actual music videos. MTV was great when I started watching in the mid 80s. I think it actually helped me greater appreciate many artists and songs that I would not have otherwise paid much attention to.

I miss the old days...I want my MTV.

Artists I Have Seen: 1D, 38 Special, Aerosmith, Alabama, Bad Company, Bad English, Billy Squire, Bob Seger, Bon Jovi, Boston, BTO, Cheap Trick, Chicago, Chickenfoot, Cinderella, Daughtry, Dave Matthews Band, Default, Def Leppard, Dio, Dokken, Drowning Pool, Eagles, Earth Wind & Fire, Eddie Money, Eric Clapton, Farenheit, Fleetwood Mac, Foreigner, Garth Brooks, George Strait, Glass Tiger, Heart, Huey Lewis and the News, Jackson Browne, Jimmy Buffett, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Joe Bonamassa, John Mellencamp, Journey, Keel, Kingdom Come, Kings X, KISS, Kool and the Gang, Krokus, Lionel Richie, Little River Band, Lou Gramm, Loverboy, Los Lonely Boys, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Metallica, Michael Bolton, Nickelback, Night Ranger, Paul Stanley, Peter Frampton, Pink Floyd, Poison, Red Rider, REO Speedwagon, Santana, Sammy Hagar, Shinedown, Steely Dan, Steve Miller Band, Styx, Ted Nugent, Tesla, The 1975, The Black Crowes, The Roots, The Wallflowers, U2, Van Halen, Whitesnake, Zac Brown Band, ZZ Top

That was an MTV staple right around the same time as these ...

Yup. The M stood for "music" rather than 'moronic'.
