Default I Like Van Halen Because My Sister Says They Are Cool

Just ran across this band by accident. El Ten Eleven. A duo with a bassist/guitarist + electronic drummer. No vocals. Pure instrumentals.

Anyway, check out this video of their song "I Like Van Halen Because My Sister Says They Are Cool".

This guy is pulling some wicked stuff. On a fretless bass. Not easy to master. This is a catchy, melodic instrumental.

In some ways a fretless bass is easier. You don't have to be as precise believe it or not, kind of the exact opposite of what most non bass players think.

Fretless basses are usually of higher quality make, so they almost always will sound great compared to the $500 Fender that most of us donkeys play.

And don't take this as music snobbery, because it really isn't, but most of what he was doing is really not that hard. Cool, but not difficult. But as a certain wise musician once said, if it sounds good it is good.

Thanks for the education on the fretless bass. I'm not a musician, but was always led to believe it was harder.

One of their fans posted that he is played a "Wal" fretless bass, which costs about $5000-$6000.

But it is pretty cool how he is looping what he is playing until it sounds like more than a 2-piece band.

Just posted because of the Van Halen reference and they way he plays the bass like Ed plays the guitar, which plenty of tapping, etc. Also the way he uses different effects to make the bass sound so different than what I usually hear.

From my point of view, and this could be just mine, but I would think learning to play bass on a fretted bass would be the best way to learn, as you have to be exact with your fretting hand or you will get fret buzz (if you don't hit the epicenter between the frets the string may hit the fret and cause a buzzing sound and it really sounds like nails on a chalk board, at least to me).

Probably helps learning the fret board note positions on a fretted bass as well.

But once you can get to the point in which you don't even really need to look at fret board too much to play, then I think you can make the switch to fretless, which always to my ears just has a smoother sound. Once you can play both, I think the type of music you are playing carries more import into whether you play a fretted or fretless bass.

Just my $0.02, other bass players mileage may vary.

Edit: some fretless basses now have frets painted on the neck. Most bass players I talk to think that is cheating. I am not good enough to make fun of anybody, but some bass players will have a laugh at the expense of guys who play a fretless bass but have the frets painted on the neck.

Yes, isn't just fucking amazing what one man and a few decent digital delays can produce... Add the words Van Halen to the song title and the cool factor just shot up to 11...

He is a player who milked a lot of mileage out of digital delays...

It was fun in the early 80's when some of the better rack mounted and stomp box versions of delays came out. You can make a lot of cool stuff layering and looping... But after a few rounds it get monotonous and boring. That's when you learn a little goes a long way in the effects department.

    Just saw this.

Isn't it the truth? I can remember when I first started playing, and I am sure I am not alone in this, when you are just playing with your effects like a kid with a new Christmas toy.

Then you get to the point in which you are mainly just playing with a little reverb.

how true....is it just me but when i look in the pedals display case i feel like a kid looking at die cast model toy hot rod cars...the shapes and colors knobs and graphics always sucked me in when first started playing.

i also remember at first wanting every boss effect...now all i have on my board is an old beat up bad horsie wah , solid great sounding phaser , a good flanger , in the amps loop a good slap back delay , and a good reverb pedal for just a touch of wetness.

i much more interested in the tone relationship between a guitar and amp now the pedals are just for sprinkling or a weird song intro.

the loopers cool but id borrow one to record with but never would buy one.
