Default Teach your son a lesson, police kill him

This kid was stupid, but did he deserve to get shot 6 times?

Tyler Comstock asked his dad to buy him cigarettes. Dad refused, so Tyler took off with his truck. To teach him a lesson, he called the police, told them the story, and reported it as stolen.

Police pursued Comstock, yet "during the chase, an unidentified Ames police staffer twice suggested that police back off their pursuit, according to dispatch audio." The audio clearly shows that police knew it was a case of young son taking dad's car and dad teaching him a lesson. Dispatch told the officer to stand down--they knew who the person was and the truck was easily identifiable--it was a green and white lawn maintenance truck.

Instead, Officer Adam McPherson continued to pursue Comstock onto the University of Iowa campus. During the pursuit, Comstock actually rammed McPherson's car, but he eventually stopped, though he refused to turn off the engine.

Then, officer McPherson fired 6 shots into the truck and killed the unarmed Tyler Comstock, 19.

You can’t lead cops on a high speed chase through town, ram them with your vehicle, and then have the story line as you titled this post.

So your point is that when a cop knows who stole the vehicle, can easily identify the vehicle, the chase is only because the cop initiates it, and the cop is told he can back off because of this, yet continues to chase...

...that the expected outcome is that the cop unloads 6 rounds into the truck and kills a 19-year old?

Cops are trained to save lives, not take them. The price for taking your dad's truck, defying cops, and traffic violations shouldn't be your life.

No doubt the kid was very, very stupid. But this is why we train cops. And escalating the event after being told they could "back off" isn't what they should be doing.

The kid's truck was stopped, it was wrecked, he revved the engine, and the cop fired 6 shots at him.

based on the article, i don't understand why the cops shot at the truck. And I'm one who is very pro-cop.

From what I can gather, it was when he was stopped and then revved the engine.

I’m not arguing any of that but I was expecting the article to read something like, “the cops pulled him over and because they couldn’t see his hands, shot him.” It’s still tragic but it wasn’t like the kid did nothing wrong but take his father’s truck without permission.

If they took him into custody without the tragic end, would the story line be, “Teach your son lesson, justice system locks him up for assault, reckless endangerment, etc.”?

I get what you're saying, but I think the thing here is that calling the cops killed this kid. Had the father just let the kid drive off some steam, he lives.

But call the cops, they escalate the situation, the kid reacts stupidly, and then a cop defies his training and shoots him (unless something comes out that the cop's life was in danger).

That's what I dislike. I respect police. They do work I would/could never do. But they need to be held accountable when they do wrong, and they rarely are.

And if the kid gets into an accident and kills somebody or even himself?

Who's to blame? One person: The Father for not calling the cops especially since he knew the kid took the truck.

The Father was in a very difficult situation and the cops overreacted. Way too many trigger happy guys on the force these days. Makes me wonder if we should be putting more focus on the training and mindset of cops instead of worrying about an ex-porn star teaching students.

But using the car without permission isn't necessarily something you call the cops about unless you're tying to teach a lesson, right?

Instead, Officer Adam McPherson continued to pursue Comstock onto the University of Iowa campus. During the pursuit, Comstock actually rammed McPherson's car, but he eventually stopped, though he refused to turn off the engine.
At this point you have assaulted a police officer with a deadly weapon. 99% of the time you are a dead man.

very mixed feelings on this....but here's the deal....you don't call the cops to report your truck stolen when you know it's not really stolen. The police are not there to teach your kid a lesson....it's YOUR job to teach the kid a lesson..This isn't Officer Friendly territory...kid comes back with your truck and he has nothing but shoe leather as transportation until he works enough to buy his own vehicle

on the other hand, what is the purpose of chasing a suspect when you know who is is, where he is going and what the circumstances are?

you go to the father's house when he gets home, cuff him and put him in the back of the vehicle if you so desire to take part in this idiocy.

cops should have never been involved, but once involved handled this incredibly poorly.

that father has to live with this for the rest of his life.....horrible

The first time he rear put the car in reverse at the stop light and hit the cop car behind him. The second time he was turning the car around off the road and hit a cop car that ran up on him (aka he didn't see it). After that the cops plowed into him and disabled his car.

Then the cop got out of his car and put 6 bullets into the cab of the truck.

The cops are not supposed to escalate a situation. The ramming started after the escalation. Again, the kid was an idiot but did not deserve to die unless he was a direct and immediate threat to himself, others, or the cop.

But when he was shot he seemed to not have been a threat. This looks bad.
