Default See anything wrong with this child's drawing?

    SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
A couple pulled their sons out of Scottsdale Country Day School last week because they said the headmaster threatened to expel their 8-year-old for drawing "highly disturbing" pictures.

"In this situation, it's actually the principal of the school who bullied the parents - so much that we couldn't even be safe in that environment," said Jeff, whose last name we're omitting to protect the identities of his children.

The three images in question depict a soldier, a ninja and a Star Wars character - possibilities for the 8-year-old's Halloween costume.

Each of the drawings show the character holding either a gun or a knife.

"I think we really send our children the wrong message when we show that, as adults, we're so afraid of our shadow that an innocent picture - that any 8-year-old might've drawn - is cause for this kind of concern," said Jeff.

During the meeting, the headmaster also showed Jeff his son's journal, where the headmaster had highlighted words he found violent and unacceptable.

One passage about escaping a killer zombie at a haunted school read:

"I'd open the window, but, stand back quickly. Booby-trapped. Shoot the gadget - a rope gun - I'd swing across without getting hit."

Many of the third-grader's other journal entries were about saving the earth and protecting humanity.

In one passage, he wrote he'd like the ability to stop an atom bomb and stop bullets.

But Jeff said the headmaster told him he couldn't guarantee the safety of other students with his son around.

"I don't understand how somebody can say that about an 8-year-old that has no history of violence, no history of making threats - nothing at all," he said.

Jeff said his son is gifted and can get easily frustrated - but, the most he'd ever done at school was crumple up some papers and throw his eyeglasses to the ground.

According to Scottsdale Country Day School's online student and parent handbook, "drawings that depict weapons" are grounds for expulsion.

The school declined to comment on the situation.

So drawing a ninja is cool, but drawing one holding a gun is off limits?

    Mmmkay.

That's some sound logic right there.

I used to draw Airwolf all the time as a kid, complete with chain guns and rockets (and sun bursts if the mood struck). I guess it's a good thing Mach 3 attack choppers haven't hit any school lately, otherwise I would have been expelled.

Man, imagine if kids were drawing some of the Eddie characters from Iron Maiden. I see nothing wrong wit the drawing. No different from what kids were drawing 30 years ago when I was that age.

My son's best mate comes from a strict Christian family who don't celebrate Hallowe'en, so this year, the two of them went to an 'alternative' trick or treat event at a local Church hall.

One of the activities was to design a super-hero costume for Jesus. We were a little startled when G came home with his drawing of Jesus looking remarkably like Beelzebub, complete with horns and pitchfork-type implement! (He said he wanted Jesus to look Batman, but there we go...)

Fortunately, the people who run the organisation seem to be a bit more tolerant than the ones at this other boy's school, and G has not, as yet, been expelled!

Jesus H…there was a time I was concerned that kids were not applying themselves in school.

Now I have the same concern for the educators.

    Excellent point on Eddie, Sickman.

Well one would assume that even if Jesus had a pitchfork, he would use it all Jesus-ey and bring peace to the world.

i'd want more infortmation on the story before passing judgement. If the assignment was "draw a picture of life at home" - I'd be a little concerned. Or "draw a picture showing how much you appreciate your teacher", again concerned.

Schools are very quick to get worried these days but parents are also very quick to take their kids' side no matter what they've done.

I should be locked away for all the Stormtroopers, Boba Fetts, and Jedi's I drew as a kid.

Hell, I built a Lego M1 Garand that was as big as the real thing.

hmmm....perhaps talking to him and getting his take on what he is thinking/feeling and seeing if there were any problems to address and IF so, helping him learn new ways of dealing with his feelings, would be more productive in the long run than making a gifted kid feel singled out and ostracized and having a case of the crazies

isn't that what most psychologists say causes those kids to go off? being ostracized and labeled and cut off from normal interaction?

Maybe it's just me, but the more a child is punished for doing something that really isn't wrong, the more their interests will be piqued into exploring the forbidden subject matter.

All these new restrictions are probably breeding an entire generation of super psychos.

I'm half kidding, but who knows?

Why would an eight year old kid drawing a picture of a Stormtrooper or a ninja draw ANY kind of concern?

He's eight, he has a vivid imagination, he's a boy. To me, that is about as normal as it gets. The world is going fucking insane when an eight year old boy can't draw a picture of potential Halloween costumes without drawing attention.
