    Default The Big Band/Swing Era

One night back in the early 90's as i reported in for my shift, i saw that a co-worker had brought in a box of cd's he didn't want. I took a quick look and the only one that had caught my attention was called "Burning For Buddy: A Tribute To Buddy Rich".

Being a follower of Neil Peart and all things Rush, i knew that Peart had produced this disc and also played on some of it. Being curious, I took it home and gave it a listen. Never occurred to me at age 23 to give big band jazz a listen but I loved it and wanted to hear more.

Eventually B4B: vol 2 was released and i not only picked up that but a live Buddy cd of a performance in Vegas and another with Max Roach. I expanded my tastes to include the great Miles Davis and John Coltrane and i now find myself ventured even further back in time to the days of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller (I find Moonlight Serenade to be very relaxing when i find myself craving Scotch).

Anyone else enjoy the music of the 30's and 40's?

Yup. His best known tune. Got about 3/4 different versions of this one.

The Rush version sounds nothin' like this though.

    Neither does Robert Plant's version.

    NICE.

I like this station! I think of the Indiana Jones and Marx Brothers flicks when I hear this stuff.

Saw this thread and had to jump in. I have lived in Northeast Pa. and have always been amazed at some of the people and events that have taken place here. I was watching a local PBS broadcast and watched a story about the "Scranton Sirens". Actually found this website for you all to take a look see: www.redhotjazz.com/sirens.html

I was amazed to see that this talented group of musicians grew up around the coal fields here in Pa. and were some damn fine players. I enjoy all types of music ... If it's good, it's good from EVH to the Dorsey Brothers and Glenn Miller...

I saw Buddy Rich and his band live in 1976. Also saw Maynard Ferguson and Tom Scott a few times. When I was really little around 7-8 ,we used to go to Atlantic City every summer and my dad would take us to see a big band at the Steel Pier and I'm pretty sure I saw some heavy hitters like Dorcey or Monroe, etc just cant really remember.

EVH 1979: Well, actually it's not much of a vacation, because we run everything ourselves. We design our own album cover, we have to be in the office every day to sign checks - the whole corporation revolves around us. Nothing can be done without our approval. We even have photo approval.

Just think of recording equipment at the time, and then just listen to hear fucking rip that song apart.

And then think about the majority (not all) of the talentless wankers on our radio stations today.

Edit: nice rack too, always a bonus.

Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

It has probably been mentioned a gazillion times elsewhere, but I think Adele on the Skyfall soundtrack sounds a little like her, at least to me.

I gotta say, with just a dim lamp glowing in my home office here at 11:14pm with the rest of the house dark, this station really really sets the tone. I've set up my laptop and iPhone to be able to access the feed at the press of a button as well.

    Many thanks for this, man!

Glad you're enjoying. I'm addicted and it's always on at my house and in the car.

If you listen long enough you will soon notice that even the oldies have their own "Freebird" sort of...

But a least there are about twenty different versions by twenty different artists.

Let me know if you have what I call the "Mel Brooks" moment. Happened to me again just this evening about 3AM my time. I think you'll know it when it happens.
