Default Future in the Past is Better than Anything on ADKOT

    Hear me out!

ADKOT blew me away, and it still does. Frankly, I didn't know they had it in them, and I can't say enough about Ed and Alex's playing, Dave's singing, and Wolf's contributions. I still listen to these songs every day, and which is my favorite changes daily.

I know this could potentially be a controversial thread, but I'm writing it anyway. I was watching the Chickenfoot DVD, and Future in the Past is just so fucking good, that in order to make my point, I found myself comparing it to ADKOT in my own head.

It's hard. It's edgy. It's complicated. It is by far Sam's masterpiece since he left Van Halen....with the huge nod to Satch.

I just read how Sammy is lame, and weepy, and keyboard driven, and soft...and Love is in all his songs, and I don't think we can overlook that Sam is quite a frickin' rocker, when he chooses to be. This is the lead singer to Montrose, peeps. Space Station #5 anyone?

I think this might be my second thread on Future in the Past...but wow. It's that good. It should get radio play. Wow.

FITP is one of the best songs sam has ever done, the overwhelming opinion of most on here is that nothing sam has done outside of vh is comparable with anything vh has ever done which is maybe a bit close minded. I actually would tend to agree with you on this one but I honestly have never given it much thought. There is nothng like FITP on ADKOT at all.....FITP is a very majestic sounding tune, it changes all over the place...it's fantastic.

    I just don't hear it.

I don't even think it is anywhere near the best CF song.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

First listen to CF that's the song that stood out to me too. But, I'll take ADKOT any day over CF. If Sam was still in VH and Dave was in CF I would still feel the same.

I'm with Dave's Dreidel. FITP is a good tune, but something about it isn't cohesive enough for me. I'd listen to anything on ADKOT over FITP, even Bullethead.

And I respect your guys' opinions. Music is in the ear of the beholder...it's not about bests and worsts and top 25 lists. Having said that, what I aimed to do with the thread is offer a counterpoint to the people that say things like "Spammy" or "his lyrics are bad", or "his music is lame, synth-based pop"...

Sammy is driven. I was just looking at redrocker.com in the music section, it has all of his work ever...from Motrose to solo to Van Halen. Prolific. And FITP...to come this late in his career...Wow. I'm telling you...the live version on Get Your Buzz On, when he joins Satch on guitar...it's truly one of those "moments".

I wasn't very excited about CF when I first heard about them. Before they released the disk they did some warm up shows and I heard some audio and I didn't think ti was very good. I was surfing around and watched a vid of them doing FITP and I was literally floored. I had chills....for real. that's a fantastic song to me.

It's more original than anything on ADKOT. That's for sure. And that alone makes it very much comparable if not superior to ADKOT. Lets not forget that for the most part ADKOT was made up of tunes that we were all DYING to hear on an album, beefed up sonically. So it really is hard to compare both albums as unless Eddie was fucked up royally during the recording...we kind if knew it was going to be kick ass seeing as we knew the songs already.

I'd put As Is up there with it though seeing as its original (not a old school demo).

I'd say Future is the Past is CF's Me Wise Magic.

And nothing on ADKOT except As Is is as good, fresh or classic as Me Wise Magic.

I have friends who aren't even fans of Chickenfoot, Sammy or VH and they LOVE Future is the Past. When that funky groove kicks in its just impossible to sit or stand still.

Songs from CF I and III that I think stack up well against kick ass VH tunes.

    Avenida
    Runnin Out
    My Kinda Girl
    Learning to Fall
    FITP
Up Next- Big time. This song also stands up to anything on ADKOT very well, imo.

The debut Chickenfoot disc is holding up really well. I recently gave it a spin top to bottom and found myself being impressed with it all over again. Sexy Little Thing is cool, My Kinda Girl is tight, Down the Drain is the opposite - loose as can be - but kicks ass, Bitten by the Wolf is funky-cool.

    And then there's Future.

    Damn.

Listen to Satch on the outtro through some quality headphones. He's amazing on the tune. It soars, it's majestic, it's big. Love it.

I generally agree with the original post.

I think in 10 years from now FITP will still be an epic song. I'm not sure I can say that about anything on ADKOT. I really do like ADKOT, I just don't think it progressed VH forward musically.

To be fair though, ADKOT was largely about VH looking back and going over older material. Chickenfoot was on their first record and threw some things against the wall to see what would stick, FITP stuck.

What a smashingly mature conversation about music.

I think the mention of AS IS is pretty spot on. It's my favorite (right now) on ADKOT, and I think really demonstrates what VH 2013 (2012) is capable of....which I'm happy to report is outstanding.

Last thing I'll say about FITP...If I didn't make the point...in my opinion, it's his best work outside of Van Halen - pre or post.

I wonder what would have happened if Sam decided to form Chickenfoot right after his departure from Van Halen in 1996. I know timing is everything with music, but take his anger and creativity from MTM and match that with his collaboration with Chickenfoot, and it could have been really special. Of course, Mike was busy with Gary and a couple of other guys.

"Anything" on ADKOT?? Interesting. I'm pretty convinced 10 years from now at least half of ADKOT will still be kick ass stuff. I'll take the majority of it over Future In The Past.
