it's become a catch phrase to help explain every problem of today. It's basically bullshit though. I got a participation trophy when i played sports in the late 70s/early 80s as a small kid. Same as my son when he played baseball this year and last. For young kids it's cool to do. Once they get old enough to not care about them you should stop giving them out.

You want to know why some kids are screwed up, take a look at the divorce rate. Never mind the silly trophy that they have on the bookcase in their bedroom until they're 8 or 9.

    This.

For little kids, who cares? But once you start getting to say middle school, you need to do away with it, it is silly for a fourteen year old kid to be getting a participation trophy. In many parts of the world you are an adult by that age, giving a kid who is probably shaving an "atta boy" trophy is silly.

But for the kid that still believes in the tooth fairy, give away.

you know when you stop giving them out, when the kids don't care to get them. My son's team of 4 & 5 year olds was super exicted to get the trophies. They were also super exicted for the fucking bouncy castles at the year end party for the league. The 13 year olds don't get participation trophies and aren't allowed in the bouncy castle. Pretty simple really. But we need a silly explanation for our fuckups in society and damn if the participation trophy isn't a great catch all. Too bad it's not true.

I like the participation "something" for the little ones. Plenty of time later on for them to realize that if they don't win, then they are worthless and weak, and life ain't got time for that shit.

If you talk to teachers, though, they'll tell you the self-esteem movement really did a lot of kids a disservice.

I like the idea of giving out a trophy for being on the team. Everybody gets one with the year, so you can line em up in order as a little historical exhibit.

But I DO think we go overboard pretending kids are awesome when they are average, and I think it hurts them. Or at least confuses them. Kids see through bullshit better than we think.

My son was on a baseball team as a t-baller. Everybody got a trophy for "being there." But then they gave out a bunch of "awards." Instead of just giving them to the three best players, they basically gave one to everybody. When they got to my son -who was a fairly weak player - they gave him "rookie of the year" even though it wasn't his first year. Even HE was rolling his eyes, and he was eight at the time...

I played Little League at 8 and we didn't get participation trophies. That was 1977. I have one from 78 that says 3rd place but didn't get one the first year because we didn't deserve it. We finished last and I remember how crappy it felt.

I do remember they had this rule that every kid has to play 2 innings. I remember the crappy players hated it because if a game was tied in the 5th inning, they did not want to bat or go out and field. Because if they screwed up, they would hear about it from 15 other players.

    We wanted to win.

Anyway all they do is mask a problem even at a very young age. I remember being in first grade getting picked for kickball. You don't think kids know why they are being picked last? Sure it makes them feel good but they know the truth.

However I know its not cool to bash on Participation Awards. So I am the asshole

    I love this.

Obviously if you're talking about 4 and 5 year olds, sure, give them all a trophy. No biggie. But when this shit happens with 10,11, 12 year olds it pisses me off. It's all part of that "we don't want them to have hurt feelings" bullshit.

If you don't get a trophy this time then you have something to hope for next season and it'll mean more if you get one.

I think all reasonable people agree with you DD. I think at some point some leagues took an idea that was meant for little kids and extended it a little too long. Once you start having playoffs and a champion I think it's time to lose the participation trophies. I don't know the exact age but 9 or 10 sounds about right

I think the "special snowflake" movement has gone too far. Most teachers would agree with this.

it's not about the trophy...kids are smarter than that...it's about the parents wanting to protect their children from learning to deal with basic emotions....why would you want to protect kids from their own feelings? makes no sense

and it's even more about administration of schools, programs etc caving in to the parents desire to indulge their children

I didn't get a participation trophy when I was growing up. You had to win a title to get one. As a youth soccer coach, me and the other coach give out certificates.
