The originals are MUCH better than the cover tunes on Diver Down IMO. Full Bug, Secrets, Little Guitars, etc beat the covers anyday

It would be hailed as another VHII or WACF.

Yep. I always wondered why they resorted to covers in '82 when they still had so many killer unreleased originals. They could have easily made Diver Down like that.

And did you know that they really did rerecord "Big Trouble" in '82 for inclusion on Diver Down? I would love to hear that recording.

Agree with all of it except Bullethead. That song is garbage.

Gotta have Pretty Woman on there. Too good of a cover to leave off.

Jeff, I did not know that. I would love to hear that rerecording of "Big Trouble", also.

I prefer "Dancing In The Street" to "Pretty Woman". What about "We Die Bold" instead of "Bullethead"?

Yeah. I wondered that also. it seems from interviews around that time it was really Dave and Ted pushing the idea. The whole DITS thing where Ed was noodling on his MiniMoog, and Ted tells him "were using that for the tune". Eddie seemed pretty mortified and rejected the idea, but it still ended up on the record. I know it's not the most well received track, but you gotta give them credit. They turned a very non-VH type tune, and honestly made it their own, and brought a true VH vibe to it, despite not being completely on board. You'd never know listening to it.
...And by the way...as others mentioned, We die Bold would be amazing on that album!

I love that tune, one of my favorites off of ADKOT.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

They did the cover thing on Diver because they are the best cover band on the planet. I have no regrets. It was rather cutting edge in 82 for a band that owned rock to do this but it worked. I know Rush tried recently and even Aerosmith did that blues cover album a few years ago neither sold well but both those bands were in their twilight not their zenith. Good talk topic though.

Yeah. Plus I remember in Guitar Player mag, I think it was, where Ed did say that
the amount of covers on the album was in response to fans wanting to hear on album, some of the stuff they famously did in the club days, and during their arena shows up to that point. They had an amazing reputation for their versions of then current popular songs and completely owning them.
One of my favorites was ZZ's Beer Drinkers, and Hell Raisers for instance.

I gotta admit though, I've never heard their version of KC's Get down Tonight....and frankly...I just don't know I'd wanna hear it! Not that they couldn't do it, but that tune? Haha. I'd still take DITS any day over that one!

Even if they had used those songs, I still think they would have had to re-work them then as the original demos weren't all that obviously. There's a reason why they never made the cut to begin with.

I don't think they were wrong to use covers necessarily. Even as much as some hate the idea of them doing that. They could "Van Halenize" anything and make it sound great.

I like 'where have all the good times gone'.... Like the drum sound....and the solo and riff are killer.
