Default Women with extreme PMS will now be deemed 'mentally ill'

Women who suffer from consistently severe mood swings during their menstrual periods are now being diagnosed with mental illness.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), sometimes referred to as 'PMS on steroids', is formally recognized in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

But the decision to categorize this condition as full-fledged disorder has divided opinion, with critics stating that it only contributes to stereotypes about women being emotionally unstable once a month.

guess my family history of mental illness on my mothers mother's side of the family can be easily diagnosed now.

It's a tricky one, because there ARE women out there who suffer absolutely terrible - and I mean TERRIBLE - mood-swings at certain times of the month. We're not talking about the vast majority of ladies who may well experience a bit of a bad-temper, or over-sensitivity, or just feel a bit teary-eyed - such ladies (and that's about 99% of us) are perfectly capable of dealing with those little hormonal blips, and carry on regardless, working with the UPMOST efficiency, as per usual.

However, the condition being described here isn't your run-of-the-mill PMS - it really is a very, very serious, horribly frightening, and distressing condition. On very rare occasions, sufferers have actually committed murder - and been let off, as a result of the hormonal tests conducted afterwards.

Of course, there will some (predominantly male) idiots who try to tar all of us with the same brush, and use this as an opportunity to write-off, stereotype, and disparage ALL women. But that would just prove the point that they're ALL idiots. Because, let's face it, the overwhelming majority of violent crimes, road-traffic accidents, domestic abuse, and incidents of reckless behaviour are still committed by men...And, they don't get PMS, do they? Unless it stands for 'Predictably Male Syndrome'...

Oh...my...GOSH! My friend's wife - who is also my friend - gets terrible mood swings when she's PMSing. I feel so bad for her and her family. It's really bad. She finally got help for it (some sort of medication and even a dietary change) and it worked.
