I'm guessing he fell out of favor with Ed, which isn't shocking. He's probably a very private person. Would love for him to write about his time working with the band. He was basically EVH's right hand man in the studio.

Good question. Haven't heard about him in years.

Not really an update as such, but here's a fairly recent (2008 I think) interview with him...

Didn't he an Ed fallout over the production on OU812? I'd wager to say that's the worst "produced" VH album.

Landee was blamed by Van Halen for OU812 not having any bottom end.

    Therefore, he was gone.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

That album sounds like it was recorded underwater. Their absolute worst. A total shit sandwich if I ever heard one, content and production. Mike's bass was non-existent too.

I think the songs are great (for the most part) production is bad. Ed stated that Don didn't really like it when Ed tried to get more involved in the production end of things, he said Donn used to be very protective of how things at 5150 worked.

I remember reading somewhere that they (ed and don) actually got into a physical fight but I don't remember wher I read it or what the circumstances about that altercation were.

I remember Ed complaining he didn't even know how to run his own board. And when upgrading some gear, they couldn't figure out how the old stuff was wired up to plug in new stuff. Which I do not find surprising. Why would Don bother Ed with every little detail? He wouldn't.

I would like to hear recording stories from him. That would be cool.

    OU812 sounds like shit.

It is partly a sign of the times, most music released in the late 1980's is all treble (see And Justice for All by Metallica), but still, the producer should know better.

It's a hard rock band, not Madonna, but some thump in the mix.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

That of course just meant that they were close.

But the sound usually falls upon the person mixing the album. The production is fine. Unless Landee mixed it, the sound quality is not his fault. I would love a re-mixed version (which will probably never happen). Mine All Mine is by far my favorite Van Halen tune. That is the perfect song from beginning to end.

Probably Ed, although I'm sure Donn was wearing a cup!
