Default R.I.P. Character Actor Ed Lauter

    R.I.P. Character Actor Ed Lauter

The veteran actor played Peppy’s butler in Best Picture Oscar winner The Artist and appeared in Clint Eastwood’s Trouble With The Curve — some of the most recent roles in a prolific four-decade career. Ed Lauter died today of a rare form of cancer at his home in West Hollywood. He was 74. He had roles in dozens of films and TV shows including a recurring gig on Showtime’s Shameless. He also recurred as a fire captain on ER. The Long Island native’s long list of credits includes the features Leaving Las Vegas, Mulholland Falls, The Rocketeer, My Blue Heaven, Alfred Hitchcock’s final film Family Plot and the Rob Lowe hockey pic starrer Youngblood. But Lauter might be most recognizable for his key role in another sports movie: He played Capt. Knauer — the imposing, football-playing prison guard and Burt Reynolds’ nemesis in 1974′s The Longest Yard. He had a different role in Adam Sandler’s 2005 remake. On TV, he appeared in episodes of such popular series of the past 40-plus years as The Office; Grey’s Anatomy; CSI; Law & Order; Psych; NYPD Blue; Walker, Texas Ranger; The X Files; The Equalizer; Murder, She Wrote; Magnum, P.I.; Simon and Simon, Charlie’s Angels; The Rockford Files; Police Story; Baretta; Cannon; and Mannix.

Lauter also recurred on B.J. and the Bear and its spinoff series. Before breaking into television, he had a role on Broadway in The Great White Hope and returned to the Main Stem in a mid-’80s revival of The Front Page.

    Always like the dude. RIP.

I know he's done a ton of stuff and was always good. But, for some reason, the first film that came to mind when I heard about this was Youngblood.

this kind of guy is the back bone of the entertainment industry.

For every Brad Pitt... who they think is putting butts in the seats.... there are a hundred of these journeymen actors and actresses who tell the stories and make the whole thing work

all in all, I would think they have the best careers...steady work at a satisfying job...home at night and no hassles with the paparazzi

Character actors are the best. They seem to be the "lunch pail" types, just plugging away at a career while the marquee guys come and go. Fletch's ex-wife's attorney, the bald guy with glasses ("I sympathize with your plight.") The old guy with the crazy laugh who was always "Cookie" the cook in westerns. Jack Elam, the crazy doctor from the "Cannonball" movies. The overweight guy with dark hair who always plays a sleazeball-type, he was "Calhoun" in "Harlem Nights", and a hundred other sleazy characters. My avatar, Burton Gilliam, with his perpetual shit-eating grin. Character actors are just the best, man.

RIP, Mr. Lauter. Your work was appreciated.

yeah...the principal from the Breakfast Club, right?

I love how a lot of these character actors have an IMDB page that's a couple hundred items long and their character names are "ice skating clown" "henchman" "thug" "terrifying clown" "bartender" "Don Ho" and "inmate #3" and that's just Richmond Branscombe's list LOL

and they've all done Hart to Hart, Quincy, Rockford Files, Columbo, Emergency, and Scarecrow and Mrs King LOL

I couldn't place the name. Daisy clued me in with her comment. Here's Paul Gleason being a bit of a jerk to Robert Duvall:
