Default Oreos as addictive as cocaine, heroin (in lab rats)

Of course, as the federal government's own research shows, a more accurate way to say this might be "Heroin, cocaine no more addictive than Oreos."

But why would we change the narrative that if you try these drugs once, you're addicted and you'll die? Well, that would mean people who still don't question the drug war would start to ask whether we should end the drug war or start a war on Oreos too.

Student-faculty research shows Oreos are just as addictive as drugs in lab rats
    10/15/2013

Connecticut College students and a professor of neuroscience have found “America’s favorite cookie” is just as addictive as cocaine – at least for lab rats. And just like most humans, rats go for the middle first.

In a study designed to shed light on the potential addictiveness of high-fat/ high-sugar foods, Professor Joseph Schroeder and his students found rats formed an equally strong association between the pleasurable effects of eating Oreos and a specific environment as they did between cocaine or morphine and a specific environment. They also found that eating cookies activated more neurons in the brain’s “pleasure center” than exposure to drugs of abuse...

    Money well spent.

Yep, I'm sure Oreo's are addictive as cocain or heroin.

    Yep.

    Yep.
The vast majority of people who have tried "hard" drugs, including cocaine and heroin, do not become addicted. What we believe to be true about drugs is not consistent with data. Not only have scientific studies shown this, but the government's own data shows it.

The government updates their stats often. The last time I posted them on here it was 2008 numbers, but there are now 2011 numbers.

In 2008, 85% of the people (12 and up) who had tried marijuana and hash in their lifetimes had not used it again within the last month. For Cocaine and crack, it was 96%, and for heroin it was 94%.

The 2011 numbers are done as a percentage of the population. So 14.3% of adults 12 and up have tried cocaine in their lifetimes, but only 1.5% have used it again in the last year and only .5% in the last month. For heroin, only 1.6% of adults 12 and up have tried heroin in the lifetimes, .2% again in the last year and .1% in the last month.

It's pretty easy to use scare tactics when so few people have actually tried these drugs.

I tried just about everything under the sun in my youth and the only things I have ever had issues with are cigarettes and alcohol and as of 12/06, it will have been 2 years since I smoked. Booze on the other hand......alcohol is a hell of a drug, ok?

It's funny how people can be so different, isn't it?!

I very, VERY rarely drink alcohol - and when I do, I'm plastered after two, and then I fall asleep! I have a much better time when I'm sober; alcohol just does nothing for me, and as a result, I don't have any desire for it, and never have.

Ciggies, on the other hand, are proving REALLY difficult for me to give up. I have brought home a leaflet today given to me by a new 'pop-up shop' in the precinct - these new electric cigarettes they're selling are supposed to be the bee's knees, and are even flavoured like my favourite brand! I intend to invest - as soon as I make it back to the shopping centre. I am on the right lines - I have a LEAFLET!!!

OK, good, we figured out that Oreos are addictive. Um, so, how's that cancer research coming?

Both of you are in the majority. According to the government's same stats, 82.2% of adults 12 and up have tried alcohol. 66.2% have then used in the last year, and 51.8% in the last 30 days. Tobacco's numbers are better, at 62.8%, 26.1%, and 22.1%.

Alcohol, Tobacco, and marijuana have the highest numbers and retention, though obviously availability and stigma have something to do with that. But if the other drugs were as addicting as they try to tell us, the retention numbers would be much, much higher.

I can help you quit smoking but I have to tell you that e-cigs havent helped anyone I know quit. It's the AA theory, it works for some but not everybody. I cant control myself when it comes to nicotine so the control had to be taken from me. So, if I was to be able to take a hit anytime I wanted, in theory how would that help me quit? That and e-cigs are much more socially acceptable and therefore you will be able to smoke more in more places. Cold turkey and the patch are the only things that have ever worked and if you can make it 90 days, you can beat that disgusting monkey of habit.
I'd rather be addicted to whores anyhow.

This reads like just a class project, not some kind of government or medical study.
