Default How could JD screw THIS up?

This has been REALLY bugging me for a couple of weeks now. How difficult could it have really been to throw a little bit of THIS

    into THIS

What boneheaded Ad/PR department DIDN'T think to get some MA/JD footage squeezed in there somewhere?

Maybe it IS just me, but wow...

Even IF Mikey sold off his likeness rights from his days in VH (which I'm sure was part of getting that whole '04 debacle up and running), I KNOW he has pulled out the ol' JD bass while onstage with Chickenfoot...

Part of it is probably because it is a mainstream commercial, and 99.99999999% of the viewing public has no idea who Michael Anthony is.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

(ok, so I know I'm overanalyzing a :30 spot, but...)

I'd have to disagree with you on this, DD.

There is only 5 or 6 cameos in the commercial, 3 of which 99.9% of the population probably WON'T recognize.

It's not about "recognizing" MA during the commercial. It's about the message they are trying to convey that Jack Daniels has been "iconic" in the American rock 'n roll culture.

And what is more iconic than someone onstage playing an instrument that looks like your bottle?

Didn't say I agreed with it bud, just saying that is probably what they thought. Maybe Mike wanted too much money to be included, who knows.

Also, as litigious as Ed is, they figured why include anyone that has anything to do with that crazy outfit. Lawyers like to eliminate risk, and as remote as the possibility of running afoul of some part of Van Halen, Inc., I wouldn't risk it either.

First couple of times I caught it I thought the same thing.

Then, about the fourth time seeing it, I thought it was Quiet Riot-era Randy Rhodes, mostly because that little hip thrust didn't seem too "Eddie" to me. After a half-dozen times, it started looking like a Alcatrazz-era Steve Vai.

After a dozen or so viewings, I settled on early-80's Warren DeMartini.

    Dollars to donuts it DeMartini.

Maybe sorta kinda BUT I do think a lot of people are familiar with that bass guitar. They might not know his name but people recognize him if he's holding that guitar as the dude from Van Halen. I think that guitar is pretty iconic.

That's 100% DeMartini. Based off of the outfit alone. Even aside from that--it's him.

IIRC there is a JD bass in the RNRHOF in Cleveland. Not sure if there's more than one or if it was a rotating exhibit.
