    Default Fowley on Van Halen

    From the Rocker website...

Rocker: You wrote a song for Van Halen’s first CD?

Fowley: "Yeah. There is a complete unreleased Van Halen CD in the Warner Brother’s vaults. I told them they should use the name Van Halen. They asked me if they should be Van Halen or Atomic Punks. The played a Halloween show at the Whiskey. Dressed like the Sex Pistols playing all punk songs. After the gig I told them “Stick with the heavy metal thing.” They asked me to get them a record deal. I was at Mercury at the time with The Runaways and The Quick. I brought the president of Mercury to see them. He said, “It’s like the singer from Black Oak Arkansas fronting Led Zeppelin. No thanks!” Mercury passed on Van Halen."

    Can you picture that?
The band that "hates" punk music (aside from Roth) playing the Pistols for Halloween?

Roth sneering "God Save the Queen" and Eddie doing those nasty Chuck Berry/Johnny Thunders style leads?

Had to be Halloween 1977...as the pistols material wasn't out until Nov 76 and in 1978 they were well on their way to stardom...

Granted Kim Fowley is the king of self hype and dubious bullshit...but he WAS there all the damn time back then...him and Rodney Bingenheimer and Harvey Kubernik were at every club every nite lookin for the new thing....

That must be where that unusual picture was from.

There is a new documentary coming out about the mid to late 70's punk scene in Los Angeles, in which I read VH may be mentioned.

I don't know, this seems exaggerated regarding VH playing ALL punk songs(covers) at a show on 10/31/77.

Most of the bootlegs and setlist reports from June 10, 1977 through Dec 31 1977 have VH playing mostly originals at shows like the Whiskey, Starwood and Pasadena Civic. Far less covers then their 1976 Club Shows.

    Typical Late 1977 set list.

    On Fire
    Feel Your Love Tonight
    Runnin' With the Devil
    Atomic Punk
    Little Dreamer
    Somebody Get Me A Doctor
    Ice Cream Man
    Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
    Eruption
    D.O.A.
    You Really Got Me

To bad we couldn't have asked Wooda from over at DDLR.com, he was the source for several bootleg tapes from that era.

Any other reports on the interweb about this 10/31/77 show?

Kim Fowley managed and created the Runaways. If you've ever seen that Runaways movie his character has a huge part in the movie.

That was a Venus & the Razorblades' song, right? And they were Fowley's next project after the Runaways.

The Runaways actually played it too...may have even recorded it. And yes it was a cover. Cherie Currie later did it too.

Kim Fowley from what I always heard about the guy huge asshole.
