According to the Publishers Weekly Twitter account, American author Tom Clancy died Wednesday in a Baltimore hospital at age 66.

    — Publishers Weekly (@PublishersWkly) October 2, 2013
The New York Times is also confirming:

Tom Clancy's publisher confirms to the NYT that he died last night in a hospital in Baltimore.

    — Julie Bosman (@juliebosman) October 2, 2013
"He was a thrill to work with," said Ivan Held, the president of Putnam.

    — Julie Bosman (@juliebosman) October 2, 2013
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, and originally an insurance salesman, Tom Clancy went on write technically detailed espionage and military science books.

He is responsible for best-selling books such as "The Hunt for Red October," "Patriot Games," "Clear and Present Danger," and "The Sum of All Fears" — all of which were adapted into major Hollywood films.

In 1996, Clancy co-founded the video game developer Red Storm Entertainment and has had his name on several of Red Storm's most successful games.

Red Storm was later bought by publisher Ubisoft Entertainment for an undisclosed sum.

Familiar with his work just through the first three Jack Ryan films. Never read one of his books but I shall have to change that. Well aware of what a great author he was.

    RIP, Mr. Clancy.

I can still remember reading Red Storm Rising while I was in college. Great book.

He sometimes took to long setting everything up for my tastes, but damn, when his stories got momentum you couldn't put the books down.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

That was a really good one. Weird, i just finished re reading clear and present danger a few days ago. Great book, movie was good too, though not really close to the book.

Ben affleck playing jack ryan in sum of all fears is worse then him playing batman imo, ugh, movie was bad too.

Indeed. Crichton was my favorite author before I discovered Michael Connolly.

That's a damn shame. Back in 2000 when I was sixteen and in my first year of work, there were one of three constants to my pay days, either a Van Halen cd, a Playstation 1 game, or a Tom Clancy Ryanverse novel.

When he hit the sweet spot of his narratives, the pages seemingly turned themselves.

The Sum of All Fears was an outstanding book to read but that movie was just farted out the ass of Hollywood..... I hate when movie studios do adaptations and ruin them.

Damn shame, he wrote some great novels that a the time had some in the intelligence community scratching their heads and wondering how he knew that. I had the pleasure of hearing him speak at the NSA when I was still in the Air Force.

I remember reading The Hunt For Red October in one night back in 1988, started at about 3:30/4:00pm and finished at 2:30am...what a great book.

RIP Tom Clancy and thank you for your writings.

"Red October" will always be my favorite Clancy, in much the same way that "A Time to Kill" will always be my favorite Grisham. You really can't go wrong with the first six or so from Clancy. Or Grisham, for that matter.

    Anyway....R.I.P., sir.
