Default US government hopes to reduce overdiagnosis and overtreatment of cancer.

Why The Federal Government Wants To Redefine The Word 'Cancer'

The federal government wants to reduce the number of Americans diagnosed each year with cancer. But not by better preventive care or healthier living. Instead, the government wants to redefinethe term cancer so that fewer conditions qualify as a true cancer. What does this mean for ordinary Americans and should we be concerned?

In technical terms, the government hopes to reduce overdiagnosis and overtreatment of cancer.

I hate Obama as much as the next guy (just see the other threads on this topic) but this is a real problem, especially with the more common types of cancer. Prostate cancer is extremely common for being a "cancer." It's estimated that almost every man will develop it at some point in his life, but most people will live the rest of their life not knowing they have it. What happens is people get checked, find out they have "cancer," want to go with the most aggressive treatment because "they are a fighter," they take chemotherapy, radiation, and they lose their ability to control their bladder or get a stiffy.

The quality of life and side effects from the treatment are often worse than the actual "cancer" that was detected in the first place. So now, doctors are recommending a wait and see approach, which will of course alarm people that have just been told they have cancer...how would you react?

Of course, if the government wasn't getting so heavily involved in dictating what forms of treatment are and aren't covered, this probably wouldn't be an issue, but that's a topic for a different thread.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.
