    Default Wiring question (with photo)

I'm swapping pickups but hit a little snag here. Took out a Frankie pickup that had two leads but the new pickup only has one wire. Not sure how to proceed.

The long grey wire in front is the wire in question. I've soldered it to that black square volume output but I know there's gotta be another step here. Can here sound but its faint. How do I finish this?

You have to solder it to the ground too.

What part of that wire do I do that with? Unlike the Frankie wire this wire didn't have two open wires coming out of the end.

I've got one of his pickups too, an older one in my 5150 clone. It had two wires coming out of it though...a bare wire and a white one. Unsolder it and check again, make sure there aren't two sets in there. The bare wire should be the ground, there should be a colored wire in the gray one too.

There has to be at least 2 conductors -- whether it is 2 wires, or a single wire + bare shield/ground, or 4 wires + shield, etc.

Anyway, looking at that pic, your solder joints on the red switch and on the pot lugs look good, but your solder joints on the backs of the pots (the grounds) look bad. Could be a "cold" solder joint on any of those. A bad solder connection to ground could also lead to a very faint sound like you are describing, so it would make sense.

First of all, make sure you have 2 conductors on the pickup. After that start looking for cold solder joints.

The solder blob that's clearly visible at the top of the pot with the black wire coming from it definitely looks like it could be bad to me. It looks like you didn't get the back of the pot hot enough and the solder never "flowed" nicely down onto it. I know that's tricky to get the pot casing that hot that fast, especially if you have a smaller soldering iron. See if you can unsolder and re-solder that particular connection in a slightly different spot on the pot.

Also, what kind of solder are you using? It can make a HUGE difference that's no fault of your own or soldering skill.

Mrj I'm convinced he soldered the ground to the volume and the hot wire is still inside the big gray wire.

I think you're probably right. I'm having a hard time seeing that in the pic, but if he doesn't remember having the 2 connectors, one of those tiny wires is probably hiding in there.

It looks thick enough that they're both in there.

Upon further review, yes, there were two wires inside the one. Very deceiving because its such a small wire. Looks much bigger and thicker in that picture than it really is.

So I have a bunch of tiny wire strands that can be twisted together and the other is a white wire with more tiny wires inside that.

Now to figure out what gets soldered where. Lol

Solder the colored wire where you originally wired it to.. the bare wire goes to the ground.
    Just go for it!

    Thanks.

I just successfully took the Frankie pickup out of this guitar and put it in the one I'm building. Then put the new MeanStreet pickup in this one. You guys do this shit all the time but I never have. I've always just had someone do it for me. It's a little intimidating when you don't know shit about how the wiring all works together.

    Appreciate the help big time.
