Default Completed my first build - 5150 body/banana neck

Finally. For so long I've wanted a 5150 style body with a banana neck but never did anything about it. I've never attempted to assemble a guitar from scratch so I'm definitely in uncharted waters here but I think I can pull it off.

Doing this is obviously my way of a little tribute to Ed but I will not be doing anything that's blatantly an Ed guitar, which means no stripes on the body. Plan on just a good looking solid color. Although I gotta say the body looks so cool right out of the box with the unfinished wood that I can see why Mr J Studio sticks with his like that.

Would be great if I finish this before the site shuts down but in the meantime I hope I can pick your brains with questions that might arise. This place is a wealth of talented builders and I want to take advantage of it while I can!

Thanks to Brett I went with KnE for the body and neck. Out of the box I'm very happy with the results. Also took his advice on the Floyd Special he used on his bumble bee. The pickup will be a Frankie.

Fingers crossed that I don't fuck it up!

Get off the internet and get busy on it! I want to see it when it's finished.

Congrats on the body and neck man! I know what you mean. When I build or buy a body, I always have second thoughts about a solid opaque finish I have in mind because bare like that....Dunno. Just looks so cool! For some time, I just went with transparent NGR dyes and a clear, so you got the nice grain, and the benefit of the vibrant colors you get with the dye that are available.
    Best of both worlds!

That is awesome, better hurry up though so we can see the finished product before this place shuts down. The Guitar room will be missed.

Very cool, looking forward to seeing the finished product!

If you want a very simple natural finish you can gunstock oil/wax the body. Oil it, then wet sand. Repeat the process till you're happy with the color or till it won't get any darker. Then move on to the wax. I did this on a Tele I built out of a tree from my Wife's childhood home, it came out awesome and was super simple to do.

The rosewood on the fretboard is the only wood we didn't supply from the tree. the pieces were just big enough to do a 1 piece body, and the wood got lighter towards the outside, so that's the discoloration you see on the lower right and left sides.

DD - It's a really simple (and cheap!) process and leaves you with a guitar that feels finished, but can still breathe, per the EVH thin-skin finish school of thought. It also helps give a nice sense of continuity since the neck is finished the same way. I really dig it.

Jedi that came out awesome! What a cool thing to do using that tree.

I actually do have one question already and most likely it's a dumb one. Ha... But the mounting stud of the floyd doesn't fit in the hole of the body. It has a black insert thats just a hair too big. I know this stuff is made to fit perfectly so what am I missing here?

I've taken apart my Kramer before and put it back together so I'm not a complete moron. Lol... But those parts all came with the guitar so they would of course fit.

    Here's what I'm talking about:

Either it is drilled for the old style screw stud or you need to use some pressure to sink it. That version is a press fit so it should not slid in to easy. Or else it would come out easy.

If it's drilled for posts then it's good it's a hair too big! That means you need to lightly tap in the black anchors. Unscrew the metal studs from the black metal anchor and carefully and straight (preferably with a rubber mallet) tap in those anchors. I'm pretty sure that's how it's done.

Yeah that was it. I had the same thought driving to work this morning but what threw me off was that the black casing was just big enough around that I didn't think it would work it's way into the drilled hole. Even though it was small it was a noticeable difference between the size of the post and the hole.

    Appreciate the input.

I first have to say I'm heartbroken about the site, but I am grateful to Brett for all he did

Very jealous about the build best of luck and at least let us know what color you pick...
