Kenya shopping mall attack: Dead who failed to prove they were Muslims are victims of a multinational terror force
International jihad emerges from terrorist 'spectacular' with which al-Shabaab sought to demonstrate that it was not confined to Somalia

As the Kenyan government declared that its forces were close to achieving success after three days of carnage which has left 62 dead and more than 100 injured, a lethal and grim threat was emerging from the fires of the Westland shopping complex – that of international jihad.

“A multinational collection from all over the world” has descended to bring mayhem to Nairobi, were the words of Kenya’s Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku. The head of the military, General Julius Karangi, spoke of “foreigners from so many nations” who had taken part in the elaborate attack. “We have an idea who they are, their nationalities. We are fighting global terrorism here,” he stressed.

The terrorist “spectacular” with which al-Shabaab sought to demonstrate that it was not confined to Somalia was carried out by fighters from the US, Britain, Canada, Sweden, Syria, Finland, Russia, Dagestan and Kenya as well as Somalia, according the organisation’s own tweets. The victims, too came from different backgrounds: 10 different countries. Six of them were UK citizens, among them Ross Langdon, who held dual Australian nationality, and his partner Elif Yavuz, who was due to give birth to their baby in a few weeks’ time.

Those among the terrified hostages at the mall who failed to prove they were Muslims were selected for execution. Two Britons were among those doing the killing, according to al-Shabaab. They were Liban Adam, 23, and Ahmed Nasir Shirdoon, 24, both from London. Security agencies have refused to confirm their identities but acknowledge that it would be no surprise if UK citizens were found to be involved.

Three years ago the then head of MI5, Sir Jonathan Evans, warned that Muslim extremists from the UK were increasingly switching from Pakistan to Somalia to receive training in militant camps. “It is only a matter of time before we see terrorism on our streets inspired by those who are today fighting alongside al-Shabaab,” predicted Sir Jonathan.

At the time, about a 100 UK passport-holders were estimated to be in Somalia. That number is believed to have grown threefold, along with others from Europe and America seeking to join the jihad. The upward trend has continued despite the recent rush to Syria.

The terrorist threat is one of the reasons for a heavy Western security presence in Kenya, including British, whose military carry out training there. The SAS were put on stand-by but UK involvement in the operation, according to Whitehall sources, consisted of liaison work by MI6. Kenyan officials have acknowledged that Israeli and American security personnel have taken part in planning the operation to retake the complex and provided logistical support.

There were conflicting accounts on casualty figures. The Kenyan government maintained none of its forces has been killed; Western diplomatic sources report, however, that three commandos and 10 civilians they were trying to escort to safety were killed by the Islamists on Sunday evening.

One high-profile British terror suspect, Samantha Lewthwaite, whose husband Jermaine Lindsay was one of the 7/7 suicide bombers in London, has taken part in the assault, it has been claimed. One British newspaper revealed that the “White Widow” was actually leading it and had been witnessed in a veil, “shouting instructions in Arabic”. It did not say why she should be using that language to a group who spoke Somali and, many of them, seemingly, English.

Kenyan officials pointed out that the fighters were all men, although some of them had gone into Westgate pretending to be women, dressed in niqabs.

Lewthwaite, 29, who grew up in Aylesbury, is not known to the law-enforcement agencies as a combatant. She is, however, seen as a facilitator and is wanted in connection with a plot to blow up a shopping centre and hotels in Mombasa two years ago. She is believed to be still actively engaged in clandestine activity.

UK security sources said they could not rule out she had been involved, although it was likely to be behind the scenes. A tweet, purportedly from al-Shabaab, announced she had taken part, but its provenance could not be verified,

An associate of Lewthwaite, Habib Ghani, a UK citizen from Hounslow in west London, is reported to have been shot dead along with Omar Hammami, an American from Alabama with a Syrian mother, in an al-Shabaab internal feud earlier this month.

Ghani, of Pakistani and Kenyan extraction, went on the run after Kenyan police arrested another Briton, Jermaine Grant, in Mombasa over alleged possession of explosives.

The largest group of foreign fighters in the Westgate attack is said to have come from various parts of the US including Kansas, Maine, Minneapolis and Illinois. According to evidence before the US Congress, a number of mosques in the cities of Minneapolis and St Paul were running recruitment programmes and sending volunteers to fight in Somalia.

The FBI is said to have launched an investigation into the American connection in the attack, but questions will be asked in the coming days as to why Western intelligence agencies had failed to track the gathering of international jihadists gathering in Nairobi, the hub for aid and diplomatic missions in east Africa providing tempting targets, to carry out this bloody and accomplished episode of terrorism.

I think we make a mistake when we think about this stuff. When we tend to think of, say, the Lord's Resistance Army, the "fundamentalist Christian" terrorist group that has killed thousands in its attempts to build a state based on the ten commandments, we're able to easily dismiss them as obviously not Christian. When we think of the Ku Klux Klan, a protestant group that would burn crosses at prayer ceremonies, we can easily distinguish between someone actually following the preaching of the church and the KKK.

But when we think of "fundamentalist Islamic" terrorism, we have a hard time realizing that there are truly people out there who follow the teachers of Islam and are peaceful, at least as much as any other religion, and then there are people who distort the message, just as there have been and still are in Christianity.

True, Islam has a problem in that so many of its followers in foreign countries buy into the message of murder and destruction. However, I would argue that this is a result of a different problem, not the direct result of the Islamic religion itself.

That doesn't mean you have to ignore that international terrorism is dominated by so-called Muslims, but the question we have to ask ourselves is whether or not, if this were the KKK, would we insist that there is a fundamental problem with Christianity or is it a result of other factors.

I know I shouldn't be surprised by this but it kinda creeps me out that this terrorist group Tweets about the event.

Yes, many people in Islam ignore those parts of the Koran, just as many Christians ignore Deuteronomy laws where it says to kill non-believers and ignore Leviticus where it says to kill homosexuals.

However, and maybe it just SEEMS this way, there aren't too many organized Christian terrorist organizations out there. There are individual Christian nut bags, but when was the last time you saw the KKK go to a mall and start shooting all the black people? Yes, the Westboro Baptists are douche-nozzles, but they haven't killed anyone...yet.

Unfortunately, it seems like religious killings are an ongoing occurrence in the Islamic world, and a large part of it is government supported by Islamic regimes.

We had a period in the world's history when the Catholic church was pretty much in charge of Europe...it's called the Dark Ages. Since then, we of European descent have learned to put religion back where it belongs, in the church and in the home, not in public policy. At least that is the aim.

Up to three American TEENAGERS were involved in mall massacre: Kenyan foreign minister says men aged 18-19 from Minnesota were among the gunmen

Terrorists tweet: 'One things is clear, no hostage is getting out alive'

They claim that they are wearing the uniforms of dead Kenyan soldiers

Kenyan Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed said in a U.S. television interview that 'two or three Americans' and a British woman were among the attackers

She told the 'PBS Newshour' show that the Americans were 'young men, about between maybe 18 and 19' years old

'Of Somali origin or Arab origin, but that lived in the U.S., in Minnesota and one other place,' Mohamed said

Minnesota resident lured to fight with extremists in the Middle East said: 'This is the real Disneyland'

Terrorists reportedly burned their victims’ faces and removed their hands

Yes there are Christian factions out there that preach hate like Westboro Church. However they are not organized enough to do much locally let along globally. The KKK operates hate on a larger scale and while national in scale, are far smaller than the majority of Islamic terror groups. You also don't have many if at all countries that are ruled by a Christian religious party. You don't have heads of Christians government supporting through clandestine or open communication terrorist Christian groups. You don't have clergy in various Christian sects who are very much in the public eye preaching hate to entire areas of the world.

Sure there are tens or hundreds of millions of super incredible awesome peace loving Islamic people in the world.. There are equally probably millions of Islamic people though who are very hateful and will cause death to those who oppose them. I don't think you will find that with the Christian population in the world. You can round up the Westboro church, KKK, skinheads, Nazi's etc and it wouldn't amount to the terror groups running around in Eastern Africa.

One also has to use common sense. I know there are peaceful, law abiding, educated people living in the inner city. That said when driving through the inner city at night, I am much more careful of where I am driving. Of course there is crime in the suburbs but not on the level of what it is in the inner city so I approach it different. Its just common sense.

    Yup. You're right on.

Nearly everyone has evolved since the Dark Ages, but Islamic terrorist groups are trapped in the world-think of 500 years ago. The scary part is, they have access to modern weaponry.

What to do about it is beyond me. Is it possible to drag someone's mentality five centuries ahead? If that's a lost cause, should we instead focus on preventing other young, impressionable and angry kids from devolving into a Thunderdome mentality?
