    Really???

I'm trying to detect some tongue-in-cheek factor here, and not having any luck.

I could see voting on a solo like on PCTS vs ComfNumb, but come on, Eruption is in a category all by itself. Eruption is a song not just a solo.

    I voted for Eddie!

How many people after hearing the guitar solo in Comfortably Numb looked at their stereo and said: "I've got to learn guitar"?

How many guitarists heard that solo in CN and said: "I quit."

I'm guessing zero on both accounts.

That being said, this is a stupid competition. As ScottyBHarris pointed out, these two are in different categories altogether.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Personally, I think the Comfortably Numb solo is brilliant. Melodic, beatiful and perfect for the song.

But yeah, it's a stupid comparison.

I can't imagine listening to any Pink Floyd song and saying after "I've got to pick up a guitar"...a bong maybe, not a guitar.

Guitar World's poll specifically asks, "Which solo is more original and creative for its time? Which is more iconic or important? or Which one kicks a larger, more impressive assemblage of asses?"

Even if you like Pink Floyd more than Van Halen, you would have to give the nod to "Eruption" for all three questions they ask.

    Exactly.

    "Eruption" is now winning.

Brett, I don't think that's quite fair. Gilmour is an excellent musician and his playing can be quite inspiring at times. The solo on Time and the playing on Marooned come to mind as exceptional examples. The playing isn't really flashy, but it's excellent, and definitely has inspired people to pick up the instrument, or get better at it.

But yeah, Ed deserves to win this one hands down. Silly poll though, especially since Eruption isn't really a typical guitar solo within a song, but a pseudo-song itself, as several other posters have pointed out in this thread and the last one.

When I voted a few hours ago, "Eruption" was behind by about 200 votes. It's now ahead by about 500 votes.

    Another stupid poll.

Eruption isn't in the same league as the solo in Comfortably Numb just like the solo from Comfortably Numb isn't in the same league as Eruption.

One serves the song beautifully and the other is a blistering instrumental guitar solo.

There is no competition here. Both are amazing. And the question GW posed to its voters is stupid. It's basically setting CN up for a loss. So why even have a poll like this?

The Guitar World staff didn't pair them up. These are the two "finalists" after all the previous voting.

I love the comments on that poll page from the EVH haters who claim that he does nothing but "wank" and "show off" on the guitar ...
