Default Better movie setting: Psycho (Bates Motel) vs. The Shining (Overlook Hotel)

    Psycho

    Bates Motel / house

    vs.

    The Shining

    Overlook Hotel

    Pick one.

Overlook by far. Think about how the grounds of that hotel played into the plot with the hedgerow maze and the snowcats. Shining was a far better movie too IMHO.

    Yup!

Cool thread idea. We could talk about other movie sets...like "which prison"...Shawshank or the Green Mile? etc...
    Just go for it!

I've actually visited the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood which served as the exterior location shoot for The Shining so I'm inclined to pick it just on the feeling of major ballsack chills as I saw the building take shape as we drove closer to it.

However I choose the Bates Motel just based on that creepy-ass house where Mother lived. It's just far more iconic.

Dick Punch is right. The hedgerow maze made the movie for me, along with long hallways of vacant rooms and cavernous empty common areas. I wish I would have been old enough to see The Shining on the big screen.

Being alone in a large room is creepy in and of itself. Being in a large hotel that is completely empty (well, besides the furries having sex in one of the rooms, the freaky bitch in the tub, the bartender, and the two twins who were axed to death) is infinitely more creepy.

One of the things I love about the direction on that movie are the extremely long takes where they just follow the mother walking around. You're constantly expecting some shit to go down, but all she does is visit the pantry. But what it instills in the audience is the scope of the loneliness, and by association, the creepiness.

    Overlook.

Those gigantic cans of corn in the pantry still scare me to this day.

Once you open that amount of corn, you're going to have to eat corn at every meal for the next 3 weeks. I have to imagine by the end of the first week your bowels would simply be a conveyor belt for corn and you could shit it right back into the can and no one would know the difference.

I'm sitting in the corner of my room with a box of tissues and a rosary, just from that observation alone.
