Default New FAIR WARNING page at VHND

Hey everyone, I really think you will all enjoy this...

VHND's awesome and expansive Van Halen Discography is expanding. As we did for Van Halen's debut album, Van Halen II, and Women And Children First, VHND is celebrating the band's fourth masterpiece by unveiling our NEW PAGE dedicated entirely to FAIR WARNING.

The Fair Warning page is full of everything there is to know about the album. Features include the recording of the album, rare promo photos, and more. This is a must-read for any Van Halen fan.

In addition to the extensive page for the album, we have also added new pages for each of the songs. These song pages include never-before-seen original handwritten lyrics by David Lee Roth for most tracks, as well as general information, illuminating commentary, and artwork for the single releases. You can view these pages by clicking on the song titles below. (They can also be accessed from the Fair Warning album page).

    Song pages:

    1. Mean Street
    2. ďDirty MoviesĒ
    3. Sinnerís Swing!

I always thought it went "keep the motor runnin' but you let it cool down, foot back to the floor, put the pedal to the metal and you beat it out of town" instead of:

    Think Iím gonna fight him?
Donít you let him put down
    Put that to the floor
Put the pedal to the metal
And you beat it out of town

Yes. "One can banana oil to go!" ha.

And the line "Iím just skin and bones" makes more sense with the original title of "Flesh And Blood".

Default Holy shit Jeff.. that is awesome!

    Jeff,

    I'm geeking out.

Outstanding feature on Fair Warning! The behind the scene info on the songs, music, lyrics, the band and how everything developed is just jaw dropping awesome to me.

I felt the need to log in here to express my enjoyment dude. As an old time fan I loved that and all the stuff you guys have been doing on the VHND. Thanks for carrying the torch with this stuff!

It got me excited enough to reminisce about FW.

For those who don't vibe with long winded rambling posts stop reading now. lol

Before Fair Warning came out I was a full fledged fan of the band. I saw the 80 invasion show in Philly, my first concert. I was a addicted young guitarist and VH really attracted me. As a young teenager I thought VH's look, stage presence/antics were cool but it was the music that resonated with me so deeply. Sure they were fresh and interesting to a young person at the time...a new band/style for a new generation but there was more to it..there was a serious "old soul" weight in the talent, vibe, delivery and style of VH's music. It was genuine, honest, exceptional in both musical excellence and swagger. I was excited to hear the new album(FW) and it was brilliant then and still is.

FW blew me away and I was lucky to catch two FW shows in Philly I was barely 15 at the time. One of the coolest things on Mtv back then was when the FW live videos were played.

Van Halen also meant a lot to me as I was not only a young kid enjoying music but an aspiring musician.

I'm sure a ton of guys can identity with this.

Back then young players into rock guitar had a pretty good handle on most of the older players styles and techniques. Hendrix, Page, etc. If you couldn't figure it out your guitar teacher or older players surely could show you. Not so much with VH in the very early years. lol Some of us would show our guitar teachers how EVH did these things as we spent so much time listening to it talking to other young players into it and trying to figure it out. EVH at the time was just so different. In rock guitar he was a evolutionary step forward... but it wasn't the superficial image stuff and technical flash that was the most impressive thing. Ed has swing, groove, he's melodic, he truly had something deep to say with his innovative style. His solos sung it wasn't just mindless flash. His rhythm playing is superb. Simply a beautiful gifted player with a original voice and approach.

EVH, DLR and Classic Van Halen was substance with style.

Same thing with Dave. It wasn't the stage persona, his cool bluesy voice and amazing screams themselves that blew me away..it was that his creativity and genius ran much deeper than the surface stuff. Genuinely cool vibe and vocal delivery..even the lyrics and wit was remarkable. It was the whole package.

Dave's vocals and melodies paired with Ed's music so stunningly. Not just the best vocal/guitar duo of VH's history but imo one of the best collaborations in rock music period.

A rare matching of genius talents. The way it all grooved with Mike and Al was perfection.

Fair Warning is a prime example of what VH is about(for me anyway).

A young guitarist hearing VH for the first time when VH was new...it was such a world shaking thing. Sitting down listening to Ed's playing you were constantly thinking "how did he do that". There was no net or easy button like today to know precisely how he was executing some of the techniques. A ton of people were not doing Ed's tricks yet. Figuring out some of Ed's wildest things at the time and age you felt like you were reaching to the foot of God or something. lol It was compelling. Every album had some new innovation it seemed. Ed is a rock legend now and all that but he was the wonder kid then or something. Truly a special talent who cast a huge shadow on the genre.

By the time FW came out a lot of us figured out how to hammer on tap, tap harmonics, even Ed's big stretches seemed to make some sense but he didn't stop blowing minds. Ed was off the charts back then. In FW he unleashed mean street slap funk...then Diver Down comes out and you hear Cathedral..another"holy shit"moment...and again not just cause it sounded so cool but because it was musically genuine, with soul and beautiful.

From that guitarist angle there was a feeling of "what is he going to next" when a new VH album was released. It made you want to stop playing and practice much harder at the same time. lol EVH and VH never disappointed.

Fair Warning hit you with it right away. I remember the day FW came out and I hauled ass on my bike to get home to listen to it. As soon as the slap funk intro of Mean Street started I was blown away. "What the fuck is that!?"... then listening to the album unfold, the amazing intro etc of Dirty Movies, the great tunes, the killer solos in Push and OFOTD etc etc. Incredible album and band. It really did seem at the time that Ed was from another planet or knew the secrets of ancient lost civilizations lol or something as he was just such a creative, unorthodox and awesome guitarist.

It's fun to reminisce about VH but we are also paying some homage to something that is timeless. Art and excellence achieved through artistic expression and the original VH band is a high benchmark for human kind.

    Am I understating it? lol

They made the right choice though. As some of the female audience may of miscontrued it as sexist, crass or vulgar, sort of referring to women as pieces of meat. Like the Ted Nugent song that came out around the same time period, " Flesh and Blood ", or Scorpions, " Another Piece Of Meat ". Plus, as a single, it stood a better chance of airplay and becoming a potential hit. Easy to see why they made the change.

YES! Went straight away to "One Foot Out The Door" to see what kind of love it got. Glad Ed's solo received some props there. It's one of my favorite on the album. I love how he solos over those chords that go all over the place (2nd half of the verse). Ed is such a bad-ass!

Great page, Hausman! Thanks so much!

    Thanks Jeff!

This is a gem of a album. Gotta love Edwards dark guitar tone on this one. We all know Ed was pissed off around this time, and recored a lot of it late at night without the band.

    looking forward to more!!
