    Default The Hair Band thread

Excluding Extreme and Dave solo if you want to count him as he got clumped into it, my favorites:

    1. Motley Crue
    2. Poison
    3. Whitesnake
    4. Ratt
    5. Def Leppard
    6. Guns N' Roses
    7. Kiss (without make-up)
    8. Quiet Riot
    9. White Lion
    10. Winger

Bon Jovi would be the runner-up, even though they haven't really played hard rock in a decade. I like how on that VH-1 list Dee Snider gave Twisted Sister the #2 mark. Like Quiet Riot, they were only popular for a couple years and only had like two songs anyone knows. I like TS and all, but come on.

Funny. My friends and I email each other every few days with some hair metal disk we are listening to for that day. Give a review and all that.

Outside of the usual suspect, here are my favorite more obscure bands. Still can't figure how to embed videos so if interested, check them out.

    South Gang
The bands sans singer became Indie Alt Pop Rock band, Marvelous 3. Guitarist is Butch Walker who makes millions writing for current artists.

    Cold Sweat
Original band featured Oni Logan from Lynch Mob. George Lynch stole him. Great disk. Got dropped on day of release.

    Roxy Blue
I think the singer ended up drumming for the band Saliva. Good disk outside of them ripping off "I'm the One."

    Spread Eagle
Gutter rock meets the Bulletboyz. Good guitar player

I actually always loved this style of music for some reason, probably cause when I was like 16 or 17 this was all that was out there. some of my faves:

tesla (all of thier records area really, really bad ass and they are great in concert)

    whitesnake
    winger (way under rated)
white lion (just for vito bratta)
warrant (janie lane was a very talented guy, it's a shame he passed away)
motley crue (just with carobi, that disk is great)
poison (the kotzen and scarceno disks are great)

lots of bands I like I would NEVER consider a hair band but they get clumped into that genre for some reason like Dio or Judas Priest etc.

    Default 80's Hair Bands

    1. Ratt - Phenomenal band but was and still is
all about Warren for me. Guy is
in brilliant. I'd even put Infestation up
    against everything else they have.
    Such a great comeback album.

    2. Motley Crue - Mick Mars has never gotten
    nearly enough credit. Guy
could spin out killer riffs like
    nothing. These guys have so
    many great songs.

    3. Europe - Grossly overlooked band. Talk
    about masterful guitar work.
Norum puts on a clinic on the
    entire Final Countdown album.
They got a little too 80's cheesy
of a sound on the follow up to
    Countdown but still some unreal
    guitar work with Kee Marcello.

    4. Bon Jovi - They do nothing for me now
but at the time I liked most of
    their stuff.

    5. Dokken - Putting them on here because at
the time I was so into them but I
don't think their music has aged
    well at all. Incredibly dated
    sounding.
    .

    .
VH with Dave ('78-'84) - The best years....the "real" VH.
VH with Sam ('86-'96) - Incredible era....."We have renamed this town 'New Halen!'.
VH with Gary ('98) - Fucking disaster. WTF was that??
VH with Wolf/Dave ('12-'15) - Amazing comeback. Smokin' album and tours.

I miss those Mick Mars riffs. Outside of "If I Die Tomorrow" I haven't heard him play a good Mick Mars riff since "Hooligan's Holiday." He plays all these shitty grungy riffs now. The only reason why I didn't buy SOLS.

    1. Def Leppard
    2. Motley Crue
    3. TESLA
    4. Warrant
    5. Great White
    6. L.A. Guns
    7. RATT
    8. Skid Row
    9. Cinderella
    10. Blue Murder
    11. Dokken
    12. Faster Pussycat

I don't really consider Whitesnake (except 1987-91 era), Queensryche, and Guns and Roses so much "hair metal" but love a lot of their stuff too.

I have trouble considering Def Leppard, and even Mötley Crüe "hair bands". To me, the "hair band" phenomenon came on the heels of Mötley Crüe and Bon Jovi's initial success - kind of a hybrid between the music of the Crüe, and the look of Bon Jovi. But that's just me.

And if you have songs called "Sticky Sweet" and "Pour Some Sugar on Me"--you're hair metal, or "pussy rock" as I call it. Not because they're pussies, but because they sing about it all the time!

Well, yeah! But Van Halen was a whole different animal - never considered Mötley Crüe or Bon Jovi as taking much influence from them (but I don't know that I've ever heard a complete Bon Jovi or Mötley Crüe record to make a full comparison).

Not trying to be a dick--but have you seen how Vince looked and acted in the '80s? Plus the riffs, the attitude, add infinitum. They mixed in some Satanism and biker gang stuff but outside of that....

Even today they still ride their coattails. The '97 reunion on an award show (done the right way, at least), the '05 double-CD best of packaging (TBOBW meets DLR Band), the '05 stage (VH3 with the circus rings), Vince's tequila (might as well rip off Sammy, too), etc.

But Poison was the biggest rip-off. White Lion second. Well, next to Roxy Blue that is.

And I love Motley, Poison, White Lion...and like Roxy Blue I guess. Ha, wonder why?

Dude if Motley isn't a hair band I don't know who is. Seen the Smokin' In The Boys Room vid lately?? Lol... Not Cinderella or Poison glam but total hair band.

They had their own unique sound for sure and they technically started out in 1980 (but weren't popular until a couple years later when that genre started). Yeah, Joe Elliott did the one-fourth-assed DLR eagle split in one of their vids and they weren't that much of a VH carbon-copy but I'd say there's still a big enough touch of hair band in there. Lyrically, musically, and performance-wise. In terms of actual hair, no. Outside of Rick Savage they never got it right. But you know they tried, which is funny in and of itself. And that's coming from a guy who still thinks hair-metal guys look cool.

Plus, if you have that many songs with the word "rock" in the title, and that many power-ballads--you're in. They may have been the most successful, but they're in.

Well there was one who was more successful. And in terms of hard rock, if there was any exception in the '80s and early '90s--not including "metal" metal of course--it was GN'R. Not just because they were thee most successful, but they did different enough. Lyrically, musically, and on stage. Different "enough."

Ever notice how Axl did DLR's "wow!"'s and jump-kicks though?
