Default My sons first Franky guitar build

I mentioned in another thread that I would post some info on this so here it is.
It all started when I got my first Franky replica from another member here at VHL. It inspired my 15 year old son to take a crack at building and painting his own Frankenstein guitar. He started off by finding an old strat body on ebay. It was already painted red but since black needs to be the first color all the paint and lacquer had to be removed. That took him quite some time with school and homework etc. Next he started collecting the pieces needed, schaller tuners, floyd rose, an EVH Frankenstein humbucker, a single coil replicator from JBM guitars, the 1976 quarter and so on. You get the picture. Next I picked him up a 22 fret maple neck from dragonfire and a few other small accessories. He would then spend the next few weeks researching the stripe layout, relicing techniques, painting techniques just about everything you could think of. Once he had the parts all in and the body completely stripped he had me drill the holes for the floyd bridge posts. Then one evening he spent about an hour in the basement putting it together just to see how it would sound before paint. He did all the assembly, wiring/soldering himself. He plugged it in to his amp and to his delight it sounded great. He spent the next week or so just playing it like that.
Finally he took a deep breath and disassembled it. Now the tedious process of painting it came in to play. We used a space at my shop to do all the painting over 1 weekend. When all the painting was done he got it home and began the relic process. He used an old soldering iron to mimic the burn marks on the head stock. Used an exacto knife to scrape away at the paint to look worn, used pencil lead to give the neck an aged look and a very light spreading of yellow paint all over to make the white and red look aged. Oh yeah, he also ended up having to make his own neck plate. His engineering teacher helped him out with that by giving him a piece of .187" thick aluminum that he drilled and tapered the holes into as well as rounding the corners and stamping the serial numbers in to it. The pic guard he made from an old Boz Scaggs album his grandfather gave him.

Doing this has inspired him to play more and I have to say he is getting better and better every day. He's usually playing when I come home from work and he just blows me away. Last week he taught himself the tapping intro to meanstreet. It's always something new when I hear him.

    Anyway here are some pics.

Here is the neck plate and a pic of the back of the guitar before the neck was put on. He painted his initials under the neck plate to personalize it.

what an amazing job your boy did. Tell him he should be proud of himself. That is fantastic and I love it. I remember when I did my first franky back in like 95 and I was 22 and it wasnt even close to as good as that. Super job and thanks for showing us that.

Thanks everyone. He had a huge grin ear to ear hearing the comments. Definately made his day.

kind of off topic but his next project he just completed was a Marlin Model 60. Built piece by piece with parts from EBay and made in my shop. Kind of crazy that a 15 year old can buy all that on his own. He had guidelines to follow and won't be able to fire it until it can me mechanically tested but it looks and sounds right.
