Default Looking back on the new tracks from "Best of both worlds"....

Today I listened to these new songs for the first time in about 5 years. For old times sake. I didn't like them then, and to this day, I don't like them now. "Learning to see" is my pick of the 3, but by saying that, its nowhere near to a VH song that has potential. The verses are great, but the chorus is a disaster. "Its about time" goes down as their worst song with Hagar in the band. Just garbage. I'm still amazed why Hagar agreed to put these on the album to showcase new material at that point. You cant say they were rush jobs, cause I read it took 3 months just to put the songs together. .....
Far from the magic from "5150" to "Balance".
What is understood need not be discussed

"Dont disturb my paradise. I've asked you once. I've asked you nice" - "SERIOUS JU JU"

"I am in a blissful state. Dont bug me!!!" - Richard Dreyfuss "The Goodbye girl" 1977

Learning to See feels like a new Metallica song to me in a way, in which they are just trying to stuff too many ideas into one song. But it's a listenable tune.

Up For Breakfast is one of the best grooves Ed has laid down in quite a while, and I know to some on here lyrics don't matter, and I agree to an extent, but they can't be mind blowingly moronic either. They ruin the song for me. As a 42 year old man I can't sing along with "butter on my biscuits" so I just hit the skip button.

Can't stand It's About Time. I think it is just a crappy tune.

I can still remember being all excited to hear it on the radio here locally when they were publicizing it, and then hearing it and going "boo". Kind of like how I felt when I heard "Tattoo"!
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

Agree, Up for Breakfast is some of Ed's most funky, grooving riffage ever! Too bad the lyrics blow.

What boggles my mind is that a lot of fans complain about the lyrics for "Up for Breakfast" like it's the sign of the apocalypse yet those same fans hold "Poundcake" in high regards. Lyrically, they're doing the same thing by using food as euphemisms for sexual innuendo. Yet the former is maligned while the latter is heralded.

Well there's a really cool element lyrically to Poundcake. It's just a much better written song.

Up for Breakfast is incredibly lame. It's like a 12 year old wrote it in 5 minutes. Sam put zero thought into that one. I completely agree that he ruined a great track by Ed. I can't listen to it.

I still like IAT, and I'm over the UFB thing.

LTS blows to me. That song is just a horrible mess.

These track obviously suffer from Ed's lowest ebb, perhaps. This was the same guy that was doing lame porno music, as I recall. Why ADKOT was such a relief, even if it itself is not perfect.

Actually, now that I'm typing it, ADKOT kinda suffers from a similar disconnected production even if the songs are better; a muddled mess,
sonically. Hope they can throw a spear into the bullseye production-wise at
    least one more time.

    Still love 'em.

"It's About Time" was fun and rockin' and did a good job doing what it was designed to do: be a celebratory song (even though looking back it probably wasn't that genuine). My fave of the three because of that, and the fact that it was their first new song of the new millennium.

"Up for Breakfast"--the lyrics actually don't bother me that much although I do admit he overdid it, but I think a song about morning wood was clever. Never been done before as far as I know. And the groove is so great I think that makes it a great song, and the best of the three. In fact, I think it's damn near as great as most of their hits from that era.

What I think makes a great new song is three categories:

1.) Obviously a good quality song. Catchy music, catchy melody, catchy lyrics, catchy title.
2.) It sounds like nothing the band has ever done before, showing that they've progressed musically (without being trendy or at least too trendy).
3.) It still sounds like them.

UFB accomplished all three in my opinion.

"Learning to See" is cool because of how hard it hits when it kicks in and how mean it is, but doesn't touch "Don't Tell Me" or "Feelin'," which are the obvious comparable songs. Beats "Year to the Day"'s ass though. And that's coming from a Gary fan.

As far the lyrics for UFB goes, I remember reading something at the time that Sammy originally wrote something about loving visiting the countryside and then Ed came back and said, "No, this song is about sex."

Sam then changed the lyrics accordingly to fit what Ed wanted.
