Default R.I.P. Jon Brookes, Drummer - The Charlatans UK

The drummer of one of my favorite bands died today. Many of you here might not be familiar with The Charlatans UK as they are not quite the hard rock band that Van Halen is; however, I like to think of them more in the lineage of The Rolling Stones. They have quite the knack for writing great pop songs rooted in funk, blues, rock, and psychedelia.

Jon Brookes was a great drummer who always provided a solid foundation and interesting rhythmic flourishes to the music of The Charlatans since their start in 1989. Unfortunately while on tour in the states in 2010 he suffered a seizure during a performance and was then diagnosed with a brain tumor. He fought his illness with grace and great strength. He was fortunate to return to the stage and perform several more times with the band he helped form.

The band had announced in July that Jon had undergone another operation in relation to his brain tumor, but that it had gone well and that he would remain in the hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately, it was announced this morning that Jon Brookes passed away while in the hospital.

Jon Brookes was 44 years old. It is always sad to hear when someone passes away, but it is shocking and heart breaking to lose someone at such an early age. The Charlatans UK have lost a great drummer and a great friend. My condolences to Jon's family, friends, and loved ones. Rest in peace in rock and roll heaven and thank you for sharing your gift with the rest of us.

I urge anyone who stumbled upon this post to check out The Charlatans UK; you might like what you hear. They are huge in the UK, but with the exception of some early hits have for some reason flown under the radar here in the states.

One of Jon's final performances. One to Another (live 2012)

I don't know how I missed this thread...Yes, the Charlatans are (were) a great band - one of the 'big' Indie bands of my generation, in fact - I have many fabulous memories of getting tiddly and dancing around to their stuff whilst at university!

It's so sad to hear that someone with whom you 'grew up' has passed on - firstly, because that shouldn't HAPPEN yet - and because it reminds us of our long-lost youth...

RIP, Jon - and long live The Charlatans' music!

I really don't like this getting old crap.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his
